The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
Just figured i'd point this out.... took a bit of trial and error but i found it.. i'm fairly confident....
if this flash ad pops up, the CPU usage maxes out on any machine with single core or pegs one of the cores on multi core cpu's.... This only appears to occur in windows xp... however in vista or win7, sometimes it'll hang the browser making it unable to respond for either ages, or never. ![]() This really doesn't bother me.. but for anyone else trying to figure out why IE may be herky jerky at times..... ![]() Confirmed on 6 machines...

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
that had doesn't seem to have any affect on OS X using opera or safari, but that could just be my 8 core...
EDIT: having the ad in view does actually increase the load across both cores of my macbook air

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
It increases mine by 7-12 % but maybe the flash add-ons always do that :
I am using firefox on Dual-core rig.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
the ad is actually regional.
We tested internally on about 15 computers however and on an old celeron it hit 20-30% cpu usage. Generally it peaked around 10%, not ideal, but typical flash really. Not sure what 6 machines you tested on Judas but if you built them, maybe best checking them all again ![]() It wont be running for much longer anyway. |

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
just tried it my self, it maxes out one of my cores. as soon as its off the screen, my cpu usage drops back down to 5-8%.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
actually out of the 6, only 1 is one i built and it's an older model using a AMD athlon 64 3000+ and winxp x64
Even with all the other flash ads running it doesn't go up.. it's only THAT specific ad that it occurs on. Right now with the Intel I7 920, the cpu usage jumps from 0% to 3% with it running with win vista x64 Freshly installed today....

The man in that ad spikes one of my cores too. He is truly, a very evil man.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
Hmmm, this was interesting...
Check the action on core 3 when you're fortunate enough to get two of those ads on the screen together at once! ![]() Shot at 2009-01-31 ![]() Shot at 2009-01-31 I fiddled around a bit with the task manager open while moving and resizing the page to confirm the usage shown on core 3 mirrored what was showing on the page at the time. I betchya it's the foggy effects with the lighting... Looks cool.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
I've got a P4 running 2.8Ghz and a wireless connection to my DSL router..... when two of that ad shows up it darn near locks up my browser (IE7)...... makes me remember 300baud modems and BBS days. :-)

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
Could it be a conflict of Flash itself?
One thing I've noticed is that I can't change any of the settings for those Flash ads as they're locked. Specifically, I can't right-click them to go into Flash's settings to turn on/off hardware acceleration, or increase the amount of system storage the ads from heavenmedia or driverheaven can use. |

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
yep, i have the same issue as well here at work. i'm using winXP sp3 on ie7. haven't tried any other browser, but if it's happening on dj_stick's mac as well, then we know it's not an OS thing. i'll check it out at home when i get home later tonight. my machine at home is running vista 32bit sp1.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
I can live with 100% cpu usage.........what I can't live with is that bloody awful ad offering a £50 voucher for giving your verdict on games, thats one step away from penis enlargement pills. I have no idea what or who it links too and refuse to click on it, as far as marketing campaigns go it ranks right down at the bottom and lowers the tone on my beloved Driverheaven.

I like to do my bit for DH and will click on an ad now and then but this one is seriously making me consider an ad-blocker. Edit: after reloading DH I now have it on the top of the DH homepage. It's shit. Even worse than the win an Coolermaster ATCS case (yes I clicked it and no I won't buy a bloody power supply to enter the competition). |
