Ideas to fight spamming
There has been some spamming threads and posts in the forums lately so would it be useful to make minimal posts before creating threads for new members?, I know that will be annoying especially for people who registered to ask about solution for problem and that may lead them to post useless replies like " thank you for your post " to make it count but I think if the Hardware discussion & support forum was the only exception for this idea as most people asking for help are in this one. At least this would squeeze the amount of spamming in all forums and make Mods intense their supervising on the Hardware forum.

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
Im sure there is already a notice that new members need to agree to already in place.I understand youre point..But making a minimal post before the creating new threads will just lead to Hijaking existing threads.
But also Blatent Spam Bots don't care about the rules to begin with. They will simply post and run in the hope the get enough views before they are removed. Last edited by MIG-31; Feb 6, 2009 at 12:46 PM. |

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
One addon that may be good, prevents posting links by untrusted users - though once again, if it becomes common that 10 posts are needed, then the bots will do 10 junkposts before the money shot.

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
Thanks for the input, this is something that certainly has been a matter of discussion. Sadly, I'm afraid spamming is just a part of forums. That's why its nice to have a good team of mods to clean things up.

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
I hope there is a system of banning IPs of the spammers to prevent them from registering again with another mail.
And the amount of spam indicates how famous is the site As spammers will choose the best sites to expose their shit , so may be this is one of the positives.

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
1) Delete the post/thread
2) Ban the user on IP That's how I was taught

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
Are these spammers the kind who manually register accounts and then use a bot or is it a bot that does the sign up too? If it's the latter, would tougher verifications work (such as a logic question that a bot can't answer)?

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
We have plenty of precautions and measures in place to reduce spam. Restricting hotmail/yahoo emails helped a lot. We use reCaptcha on signup which prevents 99% of automated signups if not all. As has been stated we have a very fast and active mod team who usually deal with spam topics within a matter of minutes.
As long as we allow people to sign-up and create threads we're gonna have spammers. But with our dedicated members and our mods we can deal with it effectively. If you see a problem thread report it using the icon next to the rep button and we'll deal with it. Thanks |

There is quite a few over the last few weeks or so..If the mods are online and quick enough to react,Most members don't get to see the deleted posts.

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
You could have a captcha on a new thread. its a pain in the arse for genuine people, but do you really make a new thread that often? Not on a post though. that would just take the biscuit.

In light of all that's been said, I think we can also pray and that might have an effect on the spamming.

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
As long as there's forums there'll be spam bots. We can control em all we want but there's always gonna be some kid with a keyboard and too much scripting knowledge that'll find a way round all our protective measures.

Re: Ideas to fight spamming
Depending on the amount of new joiners, another way to shoot down almost 100% of spam is first post moderation, though the number of hi there or obscure "thanks for that" posts seen on some forums suggests that more sophisticated spammers may be collecting validated accounts.
I know one forum wher you need 25 posts to put a link in, annoying, but I guess it deals with a lot of the nasties. I do mod at a couple of other forums, and have a couple of sworn enemies: 1. Mr. Gate, the Phone and Disco equipment spammer who abuses Onspeed proxies 2. Any porn spammer, especially those posting with pics on view. 3. Stupid guide spammers, an example of "affiliate spam" - media ripper/converters seem to be their prime area of activity
