Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

you're not alone. the same is occurring to me at home, work, and on my gf's computer (higher CPU usage on my gf's computer but not 100% since it is a newer CPU and can handle tasks better and more efficiently). and btw robert, this isn't the first time a BFG ad has caused this. IIRC, this is now the 3rd BFG ad that is causing CPU slow down.

one had the water effect to it, and i'm pretty sure the other BFG ad is still running on the site.

personally, i don't think that the ad will be taken down any time soon.

i think the best thing to do, if your run FF, is to get an ad-block add-on, and use it to block all the ads provided by DH. it's the only thing that really works.

EDIT:
found the link of the previous thread.

Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

Edit: ok the tradeup ads don't show up for my area it seems.

Old post:
I don't think I've spottet any Trade-up ad but I've tested now with IE8, Opera and Firefox having two (top and right side) pretty flashy BFG ads up at the same time in the reply (advanced) window. No problems really but Firefox certainly draws the most with flash as usual, bit spiking at no more than 15% with two ads.

Running Opera and Firefox side by side with both ads amounted to spikes at 25%. IE8 was smooth sailing all over. Very latest flash plugin for all browsers. Win7 x64. No web-scanning antivirus running.

some of the ads are region specific and I don't see them either - might be a USA only ad, ive filed a report on it.

Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

I see those ads, the BFG trade up ad, but not seeing extreme CPU usage in chrome..... haven't checked with IE8. The old ads was why I switched to chrome to begin with because IE8/IE7 would stall with some of them....... Not a big issue for me, ads are needed, just stating what I'm seeing from here.

Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

Yes ads are needed but only by these reports do I hear about issues as some are location specific, I know BFG ads in the past caused issues and one of them was removed totally. I am only part of a team guys and I dont deal with advertising. I have flagged this thread to the sales team and they are looking into it. Pming me and saying "REMOVE IT!" doesn't really help matters.

I apologise for the issues, hopefully people don't all just block the ads as it won't fund the site, although I do appreciate the reasons why some people do. I make sure we don't run pop ups, sound ads or annoying text link overs, but sometimes it seems BFG like to go nuts with the flash filters.

It is being looked into, thanks.

Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

ok our team found out a BFG leaderboard ad that was indeed causing CPU spiking. they made a JPG of the flash file and we are using that.

If any of you run into issues with the BFG ads, please try and take a screenshot so we can isolate it. thanks guys.

Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

The side bar one does it too............ hits about 70-80% here, if I scroll down the page and it's no longer seen CPU usage drops to around 10%. I think the top banner one was the one that was fixed earlier. I added a second photo to show a low usage set of ads and the CPU usage difference

Not complaining myself, just trying to help Robert out. I have a similar processor as he, but don't see the slowdown with Chrome like I used to see with IE7/8.

Hope that helps.

Guys, appreciate you are helping to support us by running the ads. you are good members of the community.

The top BFG trade up ad has been converted from a flash ad to a jpeg and ill mention now that the side ad is an issue as well.

It is important you report these because as im in a UK location I don't always experience the USA ads first hand.

Thanks.

Yeah same, i never get these 100% CPU Usage jumps so i used to wonder if something was wrong with everybody else's systems lol.
Is it just the localised ads for the USA that do it? I'm only about 7/8% CPU Usage and i'm multi tasking

Me too. Last I had any major problems with ads at DH was maybe 1.5 - 2 years ago. Currently no probs with CPU usage. On the downside, we don't get any trade-ins etc

Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

The majority of the ad issues are over zealous design by BFG in their ads. I have made the point before and when I found out today that they were causing issues it was flagged immediately.

I know most of you appreciate we need ads to keep going and its great you don't all block them so we can still pay our staff - so I want to make sure we keep good ads running. This means ads that are relevant to our readers without sounds, popups and annoying text hyperlinks. If I can force BFG to tone down the flash filters their ads are extremely relevant and pertinent to our audience (and I think most of us love BFG products).

Obviously the CPU usage isn't ideal which is why they are being adjusted when I find them. I will make sure that the BFG design team are aware of the issues with some of the ads also. Those causing issues have been converted by us into jpeg images today - hopefully this helps. As Cozumel says the USA guys do get the good deals though (swings and roundabouts, right?) !

Converting those ads to jpg really helped, cpu usage is way down from where it was. I just had both top and side ads at the same time, usage was around 13%.

However, an extremely large number of electrons were rather annoyed.

Re: BFG Trade up ads causes 100%

I believe that Opera/Chrome/FF uses a slightly seperate plugin than the ActiveX based IE flash plugin. So the variance in CPU utilization will show between the two sets. Chrome's sandboxing of plugins sometimes gets flash to sometimes act in a better fashion, however Flash is still notoriously a resource and especially a CPU hog. I'm certainly glad that the admin staff of this board are very responsive and quick to notices posted about ads gone rogue.
I agree Robert, I have Windows 7 RC on two machines right now. An old celeron eMachines beast, and a nice Core2 Quad machine. Windows 7 seems to run pretty well on both. No reason to really upgrade the hardware yet on either of those two. The old eMachine only has 512MB of RAM in it, and I'm able ot use it as a media server just fine so that my other machines (and my PS3 in the living room) can stream off of it. Have you tried setting yours up as a media share for the PS3? (Sorry to hijack the direction, back to your previous postings on flash ads gone bad)

This may be the case, i'm no expert on the matter since i'm a UK DH User and i don't experience the 100% ads. However if the ads are causing issues in any browser for so many users then BFG Need to make sure they cut back on the (most likely) insane amount of flash layering or filters they're using which is making browsers crap out.

And i've seriously got the agree with the resource hog statement, once or twice i almost got tarpitted on a site that was stuffed to the brim with over-zealous flash ads and i couldn't even get my browser to shut without ending the process which still took forever for some reason
