Forum Read Marking
Due to changes in vB, the forum read and cookie system may be showing all topics as being unread.
Simply follow this link: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/forumdis...hp?do=markread which will mark all topics read and you can start from today as it was previously. Thanks |

Thank you Craig.....
Database thread tracking has always been enabled here if im not mistaken.. (Since i have been here anyway as i always had to MARK ALL READ after my session to reset my status on threads) |

I'm afraid you're mistaken, we've always used inactivity based cookie marking previously.

Re: Forum Read Marking
I don't like this new style....
I always prefered the way when i post a new thread it would show up in the new post and my cp... I have always used that for a quicer access if it was required.... So i take it new posts from me will only show up if someone replies to it ? |

Re: Forum Read Marking
If you've posted the thread, then yes it will be "read" until some add's something you haven't seen. That's the way it should work. I'm not sure what you mean about it showing up in your cp tho.

Re: Forum Read Marking
Then thats something i will need to get used too.....
I usually have two pages open,One i use for "New Posts" which i refresh every 5 minds or so... And i use the second page that i use to post anything on the forum. Since yesterday any new post i made don't show up in my CP...Which i thought would of been different to the open forums.. So does this work in the same way. EDIT.As this thread has a couple of posts,This thread was showing up in my cp until i have just posted this reply.. This thread has disappeared. (Unless thats how that works also) The old way was by far the best to see what new posts are submitted.. Last edited by MIG-31; Oct 14, 2009 at 04:37 PM. |

Re: Forum Read Marking
While it's different and I've had to adjust my method for reading posts/keeping track of things a little bit, this new method does synch my various machines accurately. That's a plus!
Great work on the upgrades all around!!!

Re: Forum Read Marking
Its not a case of misunderstanding the new system...over a little time it's becoming clear to how it works...
I guess i have been here to long now (7 years) and was used to the system how it was..And to be honest i still prefer the older style.. Im sure this may grow on me over the next day or two,Its just the quick alteration has thrown me a little.. Its no big issue... |

If you prefer seeing all your own posts, even if you posted last in a thread, then yes the old system was better, but sometimes getting used to something illogical isnt necessarily the way it should always be. I am older than you so technically I should have more issues with it

Actually i dont know why anyone would choose to have DATABASE THREAD TRACKING enabled as it uses ALOT OF STORAGE to store everyones read status..
On the other hand if your IN A HURRY AND CANT READ EVERYTHING ON 1 SESSION THATS NEW,you can always login again later and still see all the new BOLD threads

Re: Forum Read Marking
Craig could answer that, but I doubt it uses 'a lot of storage'. however its slightly unrelated as we don't need to worry about storage, we have a full rack of servers with more than enough storage for all our sites. If we think something is going to benefit the public we will use it.

I'm with CDs on this.
The old way made it much easier to see new posts.

Re: Forum Read Marking
Ah, so that's why I have had a wee bit of trouble finding some threads lately. I can relearn but I used to live by the new posts list, hardly ever venturing into the forum tree. I just assumed there were some minor database problems after the move and didn't think more of it.

Re: Forum Read Marking
As this style has been running for several days now... I do see the the reasons DH brought this format into the forums..
But im sorry to say the old style was far easier to navigate and Far easier to see what was being posted. Having to go through the indevidual forums takes up far more time. Its your site you have to look after and aim to bring in the best for the site.. Have you thought about making one or two changes ,Be asked by a public Poll... Just a thought . ![]() all new posts will be bolded by forum default when you first look at your user CP. we all know that once we look in a thread that has a new post, that as soon as we refresh the user CP these threads will go away. well, by clicking on the "view all subscribed threads" it will bring back all the threads you've ever posted in. ![]() not sure how to get around this in the "new posts" link section of the forum though, but that's what works for the user CP. |

Re: Forum Read Marking
If there's not been any new posts in your subscribed thread then there isn't really a need for it to be shown, because it's read. As CD's said you can click View All to see a list of ones without new content.
If you want to quickly see your posts click the "Your Posts" link. |

Re: Forum Read Marking
this morning I read Zardon's review about that 620W psu without commenting (not subscribed to) - now, I return and that thread is gone forever? - can I make it re-appear?
I doubt we currently have a smart read system in place here... |

Re: Forum Read Marking
It's not "gone", you just have to go find it in the forum.... That thread should be under DH News......
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/dh-revie...review-dh.html I think that's the one you want.....

Re: Forum Read Marking
I found it under DH Reviews
However, since I usually find threads via New Post Search I hardly remember every single thread I read in which particular forum it was. It would be no issue if my thread notification (new post) would work but my problem simply is ignored here for whatever reason. All I can say it is not on my end since other forums I participate in do work fine in this regard. I assume a gmail account is no issue for DH? (at least it was no issue until the 16th october when DH notification worked last time for me) |

Re: Forum Read Marking
You can also click "Today's Posts" under the quick links menu at the top, which will show you all posts from the last 24hours regardless of whether you read them.
So combined with New Posts, View Your Posts, and Today's Post. I really can't see the problem. It's a fully functional and accurate system. Why would an old post you've seen, appear in a new post list? where's the logic in that? Just use the Today's Posts link. You can subscribe to a thread without replying, so subscribe to it. If it's got new posts since you subscribed it'll show in your CP. If it hasn't been updated you can view it by clicking View All Subscribed Threads. |
