Reputation - Is it time for another reconsideration

Hi,

I've noticed a lot of members have maximised their reputation bars, so is it time to widen the margins again, so the boundaries between users become clearer?

say 200 rep points between status / reputation markers, it's currently 100 or so.

My point is that as everyone is maxing them out, someone with 1000 appears to have the same rep as someone with 600 points.

Thoughts?

Seriously though, what ever you think is fair just as long as it doesn't make those with lower/middle rep think they are being penalized in any way...... You know a bunch of people will miss the announcement and think "!WTF! did I do....." if it appears they somehow moved "backwards" in comparison to others.....

i've seen on other forums that you get larger asterisk type things underneath the 'ticks' once you've filled them up, could you not do something like that here?
or would that start making things a bit too cluttered ?

I think there are a few add-ons that expand the rep system, but I'd rather not go down that route.

Lol, I'm very generous and still dish out lots of rep but maybe that's because I wasn't around when the rep system was just introduced and rep was flying left right and centre. I say change it up too as like you said most people are indeed maxing out their rep bars (due to me lol).

I've noticed that as well craig, so many users have maxed out their rep bars now it's almost impossible to tell users apart. To be honest I'd suggest something more drastic, how about making the rep power counter more flexible, and making the ticks harder to obtain? But in order to make something like that work it'd probably require a reset of everyone's reputation. But I'm cool with that if the community is? Methinks poll time

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Rep power is determined from a number of factors, but relates more to the amount of time a user has been registered and the number of posts they have and also influenced less so by a persons rep, so it's not really a true indication of rep or someones standing within the community.

Different coloured ticks? For example, 200s in gold, 100s in silver, 10s in white/grey.
So, for example Ali with his 203 would have 1 gold and 1 white/grey. Craig would have with his 334, 1 gold 1 silver and 4 white/grey.

That should help reduce the amount of time before it is needed to update it.

OR if we are going by rep points only that show in the CP of each, then something similar.
Every 10,000 1 Gold, every 5,000 1 silver, every 1000 1 white or something like that.
So, for example, if someone has 15780 points he or she would have 1 gold 1 silver 1 white. or if the whites are for every 100, 1 gold 1 silver 7 white.

It's a nice addition to once status, but I wouldn't even mind if it was gone intirely..

As for the problem, different colours would be a nice and easy idea I imagine, +rep for BlueMak.. lol!

I'm pretty easy on the matter. Most regulars on here will know how each other rate on the forum but for asthetical appeal I think the coloured ticks would be a nice addition.

While I don't much care for the rep bar, I'd suggest logarithmic scale (or something close to it). This way the low levels of reps will be distinguishable, but higher ones would still make a difference. I think it's also more representative of the difference. The difference between someone with 50 rep vs. 250 rep is much more significant than between 1000 rep and 1200 rep.

Hmm, I think people confuse Rep Power (the number shown under Posts:Number, and reputation/ticks.
They are not the same thing.

For example, I have Rep Power of 215. But my reputation is 15984. Which shows as the numbers of ticks on the left.

I admit I am not 100% sure why Rep Power is shown here and not Rep Points, but anyway, they are not the same thing. Perhaps a simple solution would be to replace the ticks with the actual number.

just replacing the ticks with the number sounds like the easiest solution or having the colored ticks.. but that could result in a ugly rainbow of colors on the site which takes away from the overall experience and people asking over and over what each color stands for..
