Honestly, if you've a T1 and a spare machine, why not set it up as a driver mirror? A dedicated IRC server can be nice, but also gives you a single point of failure (and a single point of connection). Just about everyone out there can get on a DALnet server.

Well thats the point its dalnet not everyone want to look at 28,000 channels of warez. It will be for driverheaven use only . Unless someone d0ses the server i dont think it will go down .I have used the t1 to host winxp sp1 for driverheaven.

DOS wouldn't surprise me, but actually, the point of IRC is so that there's a server somewhere near you. Some people would die horrible, painful, lag-filled deaths trying to get to your T1, simply because they're unfortunate enough to NOT live in the greatest country in the free world today.

Happy Birthday, America.

Crash Override is an unknown quantity at this point

Default Post

It would be a good point of presence for those that know how to use IRC clients

Im an IRC dummy however so I wouldnt be found on there too often..

as for it being slow it wouldnt be any worse than the fact that DH is on a T3 in a location that others are far from

Well I voted no, but only because I dont think it would be overly visited. R3D has one too and its always empty. However if I was made an operator I would surely vote yes

Anyways, maybe it is a good idea anyways. ALOT of people come by here but most of them dont care to register. Maybe if they knew there was an IRC server they would join that one sicne they probably already have it installed. I guess we should give it a try Change my vote to yes please

I love IRC; a DH IRC channel would be excellent. It doesn't look like others are as interested, though -- it wouldn't be fun without widespread participation.

Channel or server, whatever, can be used to better distributed service pack betas, drivers, etc.

you're right shaith...it would be a hell of lot easier to track down release servers on irc...its quite simple to run a timed ad for a fserve or ftp...

go ahead with it david. you'll see me in there...and i'll be the first in line to share my bandwidth.

Dunno about the IRC channel, but i would most certainly prefer a server over a peer to peer base.

Quite frankly i don't trust other users in an unregistered system, particurlarly with executables such as patches !

As for a server, it would not bother me to have an advertisement when i am downloading, but it would bother me certainly if i am browsing the forums.

This is not to say, however, that i would not put up with a banner ad if one were to be put on the DriverHeaven main or forum page.

An ad is a small price to pay for the content that is present here. (BTW, i prefer right hand, far side of the screen to other positionings.... if that helps )

Well I've been sitting on the IRC server for a few weeks now, and I really like it, It's fun and you can get answers to more trivial questions that you feel stupid posting, a few minutes later ur question is floating away to the top of the screen and u've either got an answer or everyone's forgotton also you get to kno the peeps behind DH which i like. overall I give it a 9/10, (9.5/10 with +v and 10/10 is if had +o, so really it's as good as it can be)

I dont like advertisements and im trying every other alternative rather to having annoying flashing gifs and pop ups all over the place.

So, everyone if you can, donate a little to the upkeep of the server.
