Pop ups!!

Don't mean to gripe, cuz this is one of my favorite sites, but..

What's with the assault of pop ups tonight on this forum?
One right after the other. One of them sets off my a/v protection...

:o

There is only one popup, if your firewall or A/V software is blocking cookies, it may prevent the ad from checking if it already showed the popup once.

people that donate to the site shouldnt have to deal with a full screen assault with pop-up ads.

use spybot S&D, make sure it's got the latest update then immunize, voila, no popups. Of course you could switch to a real browser like opera or firebird instead of the gaping security hole which is IE and not have to worry about it.

its one pop under ad which runs on a cookie system, sorry you are annoyed.

ill look into disabling ads for donators at some stage, not sure of the complications it will add in coding.

Zardon, fileplanet does that with subscribers... I wonder if they'd tell ou how to do it? Probably not as they are a major corporate conglomerate and those are like... trade secrets, but it might be worth a shot?

that would make me mad too, I don't think we're supposed to have any ads like that in the rotation.

everyone is getting mad...... nothing new there then.

the code for popups is only on the front page - for one popup, sites like omegacorner and many other tech sites have numerous popups, ive even been on sites where there are popups on the forum !!! .. no one hates them more than me, but for those of you who havent ran a site like this, it costs a substantial bit of money. also those of you who remember when DH started I ran the site for months without any ads with the hope people would like it and donate to help cover costs. They didnt, apart from a few like sinjin, therefore I had to look into getting an ad host. You know running a site like this is in some respects quite a dirty game - the ads cause so many site performance issues and they also get people so pissed off I get hate mail, one guy even saw an Nvidia ad and said I was a sell out, go figure, the ads are run from an ad company who get the best deals then pass on a small percentage to help cover costs.

ill run this site so as I dont start losing money, simple as that. This is the first time ive heard from a donator that the ads are annoying, so ill look into it. There is also a PM function to talk to me directly, sometimes thats a nice option - certainly helps us improve your experience of the site.

I am also not aware of any forced popups making DH your home site. ive had to email the ad company about gator and a few other things, and im getting frustrated its out of my hands too, ill pass on the comments about that pop up as well.

The whole popups wanting to install software and crap is a bit much, I haven't donated yet although I'd like to, just haven't had the funds. Hopefully this week or so I will until such time however, yeah the popups are outta hand on a poorly configured rig, wanting to redirect you, advertising for sex, picking up singles, taking up the whole screen good lord Zardon the advertising group you use has gone off their rockers! I don't have to worry about pop-ups at home but yeah at work this is silly I couldn't even finish typing this post without multiple pop-ups! Grab some egg-nog and send em an Email, or some explosives. Jesus I just got a pop-up which opened a txt file warning me about spyware and it ejected the cd player on this rig.

just bookmark the forum and not the front page, ive already said there the popunder isnt on the forum.

I wish everyone would relax, I said ive emailed the ad company but they arent likely to reply on christmas day. Ive also never seen any of these "malicious" popunders in IE - just simple best buy or similar ads, so I can only act when people tell me! if anyone can supply more information in email to me id appreciate it -- thankfully dyre has been very helpful with his thread in the feedback section so I can report exactly one of the problems - my email is always open for site related comments.

I'm not going anywhere. Just wanted to make the powers that be aware of the problem. It REALLY got bad the last couple of days.

I'm not even complaining about ADS per se. I know they're needed badly. But, they should be polite about how they treat the users. This one (or how many) that changes the default home page really is unacceptable, though. I know you'll take care of it.

I do have a hot link to just the forums when things like this develop.

I don't know if anyone else uses a little prog called popup ad filter which can be found at http://www.softpile.com/Internet/Bro...012_index.html

It filters out about 99% of all pop ups and unders and I have never had any probs with ads on DH whilst using it. It really works.

rolleyes

yes we all know pop up killers but thats kind of defeating the point of me putting them there in the first place, im trying to get some revenue for a server upgrade logla. If everyone uses pop up killers then the site loses alot of money.

if the popunder is working right, it should only be one harmless popunder every so often which will give no problems. of course atm this isnt the case but hopefully in a few days it will be sorted.

Running a site like this sometimes isnt pleasant - any of you actually think I like ads? sometimes I feel "dirty" myself, I have to ensure DH stays up and any possible upgrades we need (which we do need ) can be afforded.

we are working on removing ads for donators (or the option to open in your profile), and ill get the current ad problems sorted out, its a constant headache for me, id much prefer we lost them completely - as ive said earlier today if the site was the same size it was in the first few months we opened then most of the feedback threads would be gone and id be left with the positive comments. having no ads is a fine theory for a small site which costs $10 a month on a shared server - and you frequently see the people running these size sites saying "oh no way would I have popunders or ads, it ruins the layout or we wont ever do it!", I learned with experience on that one as my bank balance was getting lower each month.

Between drivers, and main site hits, its quite costly now. Ads are the only way to pay for it. Its the way the net is now, and I hate it. Success has its burdens.

I'm sure there are always alternative solutions to little problems like this (sorry this methodology has been drilled into me by working for too many greedy corporate bodies). There are bound to be other ways to fund the site - donations being one of them. I shall put my money making business hat on for the next couple of weeks and see if I can come up with any ingenious cash generators (all ethical and legal of course).
Sometimes I even suprise myself so who knows what I may come up with.
