I'm actually for the idea of being able to view without registering.

In many ways, I think it will actually enhance and encourage more people to join. It's like being able to window shop so that you can determine the quality of the goods without having to actually purchase anything. Once you're sold on the quality, registering should be an easy step.

I had to look twice when I saw the thread title.

I think it will be good for the site Zardon. Time will tell though.

Can I be shocked, I think I'm shocked.

Congratulations and I think it'll work out well for you also, although if I haven't mentioned I'm a little shocked to hear it. (I really never thought I'd see the day, I really didn't...did I mention I'm a bit shocked?)

Wow, this is a GOOD THING(tm) and I think it'll surprise you with it's positive reactions.

I think it's a great idea! Let the site be seen for what it is and the people here that make it what it is.

So many have said in the past what a great place this is and are even privileged to be here - I'm one of them, and just one (thank God! ).

I like the idea. It will allow more people to view the site without the hassle of having to sign up just to see what the site has to offer. Kind of a try before you buy thingy>> Then when they go through the forums....and see how nice the atmosphere is here.....and the amount of information to be had.......the membership #'s will climb nicely.

Never spotted the vote - I must admit, I prefer to browse a while before joining a forum - though ons some, I am an "eternal guest".

Seems to have been a bit slow fopr the past couple of days, is that guests and massed ranks of search engine spiders?

Even with guest access, some areas should be members only - the offtopic/debate type areas, and especially the FLAME WARZONE.

And indeed, it's nice to have some areas where you know that you are not being watched by every casual observer, especially where it may get somewhat contentious!

Just to inform the DH staff that proper /robots.txt might help ease the server load in case of search engine(s) targetting the forums now that they are open to all..

It wasn't a public vote, it was between some admins in an MSN conversation . As for site speed, it's been about average for me lately.

Who's Online includes 105 (Visible and Invisible) members and 228 guests on the boards

It takes 40 seconds for every page to come up- I sit and wait for almost a minute for every time I click view, reply , or anything- The site is as sluggish as I have ever seen while still being able to load up at all.
It was always a little slow, which is fine, but this is ridiculous.

Unless there are some other issues today, is this what is causing the sluggishness?

I think the server might be under DOS attacks, I couldn't even connect this morning, and the number of users online isn't really that much above average.

After a few minutes of navigating the site, I was thinking the same- I noticed some windows would pop right up, and others would hang, sometimes they would say "done" in the status bar, sometimes there would be a white page with nothing in the status bar and the little "flag" in the top right corner would quit "waving" (Win XP, IE 6)-

So it was acting different than it would if it was just a slow day or something.. after seeing the article about DNA drivers, I can't imagine who would want to DoS attack DH

Oh well, I'm sure we will get through it. Hope you catch them if there is foul play involved....

Hmm, I think I was a fan of only registered users viewing. Kept us as more of a tight knit group. Now it's rage 3d, not really but... DH loses some of it's aura making the forums public. Although it makes it more convenient to see whats going on away from home.

The site, presently, is really, really refreshing slow. BUT, that's got to be due to this:

"105 visible and invisible members......215 guests online"

Couldn't connect yesterday for about 10 minutes, other sites were normal at the time.

I've noticed that the site has been pretty sluggish for the last couple of days. Mainly loading the front page, although quite often slow when loading some thread. Still sluggish now. This may have something to do with me cocking-up my browser.
