stuck on front page
This happens all the time- I've cleared out everything (cache, cookies, etc) and the front page constantly gets stuck here, sometimes it's only for one or 2 seconds, but many times it's up to 40 seconds- or even a minute.
I actually counted and it was 27 seconds before the rest of the page loaded this time. It's the top ad- it stays white, and blank, and then as soon as that loads, the rest of the page loads... It does this with or without my firewall on- Even if the page loads right up almost instantly, it still loads up what you see here first, then the rest of it after- it's like I'm loading 2 pages or something. Sometimes the whole page loads up and the top ad is still white, but the ad fills in as soon as the rest of the page loads.. It seems like an ad issue, because the server is really fast everywhere else. But no matter what it loads things in that order- what you see in the pic, then a pause, then everything else- the only difference is the length of the pause, sometimes 1 second, sometimes 1 minute (not an exaggeration there either)... It loaded like that before the new server too- so it's probably not the server, it's the way the page loads, or the order in which items are loaded, or something.

That is interesting because I have my internet shortcut set to "open in maximized window"-- I'll try minimizing and maximizing to see if that makes the page load faster if it is "stuck" If it does then there is definitely some kind of small bug somewhere either in EI6 or the website.. After trying Mozilla I refuse to use it- sorry, but I find it clunky and very limited in it's adjustably. When I install it on my machine it actually screws up IE- so I cannot even test it. EDIT Now I cannot get the page to do it for more than a half a second- But before it was doing it for more than 15 to 20 seconds everytime.. definately stumped on this one.

The way the page is rendered means the add will load before the content. Shouldnt take long but it may be that the routing from the ad company to you was a little slow today.

I remembered this web bench tool and wanted to see if I could get it to happen again- I took a screenshot after 37 seconds- the page loaded at 39 seconds- and that ad in the status bar was there the entire time-
On other tries the page loaded in 2 seconds, 5 seconds, 10 seconds, etc..... The fastest was 2 seconds which is about what you would expect- but 37 seconds waiting for the page to load because of an ad? In the screenshot the page was loaded, but many times it won't until that ad loads- and it takes just as long.. Why can't the ad be the last thing to load if it's such a problem? I seem to remember some time last year someone switched around the way the ads loaded and it worked great- I think the only way to get around this would be for me to block the ads- which I really don't want to do- but if it takes 30 seconds to load the page because of an ad, what else can I do? I click on all the ads almost every day and check out the sites they lead to so as to help the site, but if it makes me wait 30 seconds to load the front page 50% of the time- there is a problem with that ad.

I have to say that i'm not waiting for more than a few seconds, ever. But i'll have it looked into.

I also tried that tool and it never took longer than 6.5 seconds to load the front page... very bizarre.

This may be something here-
Ok, I noticed cookies being blocked, and I noticed the the notification coming up right when the page starts to hang. In the past few minutes I have tested DH main page quite a few times, and sometimes it won't load at all for me- I can get that menu on the left, and even go to the forum through the shortcut and then press the back button and the front page comes back looking the same as it did- with nothing there accept what you see in the screenshots.. I can say this, it sometimes loads right up- and sometimes takes forever. But I checked what was going on with the blocked cookies, and took another screenshot. I have my privacy settings set to medium, so one of the ads is trying to put a cookie on my PC that my IE won't accept. Thus the page hangs.. I dunno- I allow more Adaware cookies (stuff that Adaware removes when I run it) than I even should, but I'm not going to put my IE privacy settings on low- medium should allow enough cookies so that ads don't make pages hang (if that is in fact what is going on here)-

Then I took a screen after clicking on it- Maybe one of the ads has a problem with one of the privacy policies or something?
I could try to allow this cookie even though it has the policy problem, and see if that clears up the hanging.. If that works then that was in fact the problem I guess.

Well I uninstalled that crappy firewall McAfee Personal Firewall plus-- And the page loads right up -
So I dunno- maybe it was that, but of course right now I have no firewall at all- so I'll be going now to install Outpost and see how that works. I'm kinda nervous about being online without a firewall right now so C-ya later till I get one. ---EDIT---- The front page loads up fine when no firewall is running at all. As soon as any firewall is running it hangs at the same place, even for different firewalls- I'm not blocking anything, but the page hangs when I firewall is present. It doesn't really make sense. Why would a software firewall cause this? Even if "allow everything" is selected, the page hangs, but I f I turn the firewall off completely so it isn't running at all, the page loads instantly everytime.... This doesn't happen on other websites that I have seen- it only happens here. Outpost seems like a real pig as far as software firewalls go though, I don't think I'll keep it on for more than a few minutes- It slows everything down. Sygate was good, but it was such a pain to set up. ZAP was a pig, McAfee sucked, but was very easy to set up. I haven't tried the free firewalls yet- like Tiny or that other popular one I can't remember the name of. Can't get a router yet, so I guess I'll have to keep looking and testing.

PFS - Personal Firewall Software is really a swiss army knife these days as they also do www content filtering, cookie blocking, ad filtering, etc etc.
imo this goes above and beyond what a firewall should do. Look into basic, good firewalls like BlackICE and Kerio

Well I just reinstalled Sygate Pro 5.5 and the front page only lags at that spot for about 0.5 of a second- Just about the same as with no firewall. So I guess it was crappy firewalls that was doing it- Mind you I just installed it and haven't really customized any settings or installed any advanced rules, but maybe I won't and just let do what it's going to do unless it breaks something. I haven't tried Kerio yet, maybe I'll try that if Sygate doesn't work out for me.. Before (a few months ago) I uninstalled Sygate because when I tried to set up any custom rules it was a huge hassle, and never seemed to work right- But maybe I really don't need those custom rules, it seems to block what it should, and let through what it should, so maybe I'll try a novel idea and leave it alone.. *EDIT Well it looks like it was that dumn Firewall, because after a few hours with Sygate- it loads fine, it still lags a little but at that spot, but only 1 - 2 seconds max, so I would say problem solved.
