Front page: New flash menu + Firefox = pretty ugly positioning problems
Just noticed that the new flash side menu while looks nice wreaks havoc on the front page, as a lot of other elements are not rendered correctly in Firefox. Works fine in IE. Gimme a second, I will get a screenshot of what I see.

I'd rather have a menu where it's possible to open a link in a new window. Perhaps such an option could be incorporated into the flash design, but I only care about the functionality in whatever way it may present itself. DH has been my favorite site and forum for a while now but if there is anything I would have differently then it's the overal design-driven orientation that sometimes takes form over function. No biggies but just some little things here and there that adds up, and nothing more than my humble opinion.

Yep!, tripped up here, IE5.5, and Outpost Firewall taking a few nibbles out.
Flash disabled, script enabled under protest, and only because posting won't work without it. |

I second mkk's opinion here. I love opening links in new tabs (middle click in Firefox) and so flash definitely prevents me from doing this. Worth noting however, that I rarely open things in new tabs from the menu, since they are more static links, and the majority of things I am interested in is forum/discussion, which I can still easily access using new posts link in my toolbox. Yet some people such as mkk will find it harder to make it work with flash menu.

I always felt the navbar menu was extremely plain and it needed something on the front page to lift it a little. We looked at DHTML options and some flash options and ended up with this. The reason I went with flash was primarily due to the fact that the regulars here all love the flash work within the reviews, meaning the custom graphs etc. Certainly ive had some negative points about them but ive strong goals on producing reviews which look as good as they read, I dont see a problem with this, and it certainly wont be changing unless I get masses of negative feedback, which I havent done in the 8 months since we started them, most people love the design as well as the content. As for the front page menu well it falls under the same thing, 99% of people browsing according to macromedia have flash player installed, its free, installs automatically on most systems and should cause no issues. This is why I feel perhaps its a personal choice response from a few people who dislike flash, rather than an issue which is ruining the useabilty of this site. it would be very easy for me to have straightforward HTML on this site, with a single layout and word based graphs and graphics etc, but I feel we need to keep constantly trying to push the envelope and present the content in as pleasing a way as possible. |

Now I know why I can't see the review images - BLAST!
If it wasn't for online games, I wouldn't have flash installed at all - I treat all "active" content like a rather dodgy hand grenade. |
