Spam reporting

We have some competitions running at the minute and hopefully some new members who join up will remain and become a part of the community. unfortunately a trade off due to this is some spam may be posted. now of course some spam on every board is par for the course but I dont want alot of old threads opening for no reason and useless posting all over the board.

Staff are instructed to monitor this but if you feel they have missed some threads which would be better shut please post the url in this thread and it will be looked into.

Yeah, this spam is getting annoying. Anything to get to ten posts. I hate those posts that are in a thread that has been sleeping for about month untoched. Then someone pops in and says something to the effect of "yeah, I agree with xxxx." Zardon? Can we change entry to the contests to 50 posts? Cuz kids are popping in here. Posting 10 threads then playing in every contest without contributing crap to the forum. On top of that, kids are coming in and posting bs to the forums. If the limit was higher maybe less people would decided to join cuz the limit is now changed to 50. Besides if it was a 50 post limit I believe that there would be more meaningful posts in the forums, less spam.

DriveEuro, I really think that 10 posts is a good idea at the moment - while we will get people here who really don't give anything to our community and just want a swipe at the prize, I think that raising the post limit to 50 will simply scare away people and make us a little too elitist... It is really hard to say - DH is pretty special in that spam is rare, and spam appears to be all we are getting from the new people... however, I think that the best solution would be to simply PM the posters (so we don't contribute to the overflow of useless posts) and ask them to keep in mind quality is worth it over quanitity... the ones who listen and improve are the ones we want to stay, and the ones who don't listen will probably be leaving after the competition anyway, and we won't have to worry about them beyond a couple of stupid posts...

I think a word count would be more in line, but might be difficult to admin...I know how long it took me to hit 50 posts with being busy IRL... I think quaility over quantity

Just point the spammers out to me.

There won't be anymore problems from 'em.

I would personally love a word count instead of a post count I have posted one liners that may not have been the most useful, but I also posted something that had to be split into two replies because it hit the maximum for the post size I think that if it is possible, a word count would be really useful... though we may end up with people posting entire news articles, lock stock and barrel, in order to pump up their word count, but again, its hard to say and in the end up to the admins and not us

I have thought long and hard over this as I did before any competition was opened.

the 10 post count is there to make people who come to join the competitions make the effort to look around and join in, and perhaps see what a great little community we have here. and yes im fully aware that sometimes it will create spam, and I do feel that if we get even 100 good members in 1000 its worth the "trade off".

I have made every effort to instruct all DH staff to monitor the forums closely for "spam" and to handle it and the offenders in a polite yet firm manner.

I opened this thread so I could let the older and "core" DH members like the ones who have posted have some feedback and to help the staff look over threads and posts that you feel are annoying.

I dont want spam either but I do hope you agree that if we get even 30 good members per competition we run, its worth the effort.

As for raising the competitions to 50 user posts, im sorry I do feel that this would force people to not even make the effort as it would take quite considerable time and effort for a new member to post that amount over a few weeks in a constructive manner.

but guys I DO listen, I respect the members, and I class alot of you as friends, so please, understand im attempting here to get new members, while maintaining forum standards. its not always 100 percent smooth in a growing community. I need all the dedicated members like you guys to help. we are all a team right?

Hhahahaha, yeah, I never PM them either. With being on 56k and downloading 24/7. I cannot even use the post reply buttong and get the reply form. Takes me at least a minute to load. I don't PM others. Maybe I should, helps reduce the spam.

guys if you see really old threads being lifted with no purpose, or spam threads appearing. post the link in here or PM an online mod. staff will look into it as soon as they can.

there is also a "report this post to a moderator" link under every post. this sends a pm to all mods listed under that particular forum with your explanation as to why you feel a post should be moderated. but as far as a speedy reply is concerned, pm an admin, supermod or mod of that forum who is online. that saves us pm space...

Reporting the post is by far the quickest method, and as it often goes to upwards of four mod's your likely to get a quick response. It does look a little daunting but it's not a big serious thing like a big red, don't touch this button. That's not to say it's ok to abuse it
