Amd 690g

Hmm... where do I start?

My main complaint about this chipset is it's integrated graphics. But since that part is going to be rather long, I wll start with saying that they screwed up AHCI mode fucking badly so that you basically can't enable it with Vista (and older Linux kernels where workaraound isn't included). Not to mention that this southbridge was old junk by the time this chipset was released. But IDE mode isn't that bad at all, and I wouldn't be pissed of at all if...

GRAPHICS actually WORKED. Not worked great, but worked decently.

It doesn't.

With proprietary drivers in Linux, you get a nice diagonal line (you actually see TWO TRIANGLES in which display is rendered) everytime you switch desktop. I could learn to live with that itf proprietary drivers worked better with WINE. And didn't corrupt my display occasionally. And didn't suck at video playback.

"But this card is supported by free drivers!", I hear you saying.

With free drivers it works even worse. Works? You can't call it working. I get no video greatness at all (stuff like Textured Video is something you can only dream about, since there is some issue that causes this to hang on R500 and RS690 and it's not yet investigated enough).

"Enable DRI, fella!"

Sure... you can't resist the urge to enable it when it works so good. Except that I trigger this on my board within 20 minutes. And even when it works, it's slow. And has artifacts in many games. And when I say it's quite slow; I mean 300 FPS in glxgears kind of slowness.

What month is this? August 2008? When was free support for RS690 announced? Like, September 2007? A year and it still isn't good? Sorry?

There is a spectrum of problems caused by the fact that I have ASUS board, which has insufficent cooling on the northbridge and crappy outdated southbridge BIOS and issues with DDR2 800 memory (not to mention it's really picky about the brand) and so on. It's not all AMD's fault, I guess.

Actually, there is a reason why this post wasn't filled with anger. Today I went to the shop and took 30€ out of my wallet and bought an 8400GS. Not because I needed it for gaming or anything at all.

I wanted it just to work. A bit of video and id Tech 3 repertoire of games. Was I asking too much of an integrated graphics?

It's not AMD's fault in ANY way.

Look in a mirror to find out whose 'fault' it is.

YOU are the one using LINUX, which means you are supposed to be (at least according to the other LINUX users), an UberGeek with an e-penis the size of New Jersey!

One would think, that if one were using an LINUX, which is known to have very little "Official" support, that one would do a little research and investigation to see if the components he was wanting to use were in fact "LINUX friendly".

No, you were asking too much of LINUX!

I mean come ON...."Linux...Games"

Why do I get the impression that your REAL vs PERCIEVED tech knowledge is similar to a kitten looking into a mirror and seeing a Lion?

Yes, it's always my fault. Because, of course, AMD DIDN'T PROMISE TO SUPPORT LINUX. Oh, no. They never said anything about it.

Beyond3D - AMD opens up to Linux; Better support and open source drivers promised

At all.

good to see you Riva, its been years since I saw you on here. too bad ATi is no longer in those driver glory days of catalyst 3.xx. In addition, AMD gave up on nVidia because it bought out AMD. As much as I liked ATi, right now I just wouldn't recommend anything but their TV tuners!
