6 to 8pin Power Adaptor Cable

Because of the lack of one of the above two little cables (that retail for aout 2 to 3 bucks excluding tax on most sites), I will have to wait the WHOLE FUCKING long weekend to be able to use my VisionTek 4870X2 card. I know this was due to poor planning or sometimes even no planning thereof on my part and heavy amounts of impatients but like I said in the other thread, I honestly thought I had one with my power supply's packaging (and I'm not blaming power supply manufacturers as alot of people SLI and the only reason I got the power supply I did again was because I was too impatient to wait for the 1000W which I may as well have done as the situation I'm in now means I'm going to have to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday next week anyways. However I would really appreciate it if psu manufacturers did include these adpator cables where they saw necessary as some psus, even though geared toward SLI, could handle ATi cards in Cross Fire and this would be better as people who didn't know what they were doing wouldn't try and power a crazy power hungry card with a 250watt psu using an adaptor supplied with the card though this would be there own friggin' problem.)

So my question is this, why in the hell do like 93% of video card manufacturers not supply this little 6 to 8 pin PCIE2 adaptor cable if I may ask???

This is basically what came with my VisionTek 4870X2 graphics card, and no I'm not about to crimp and make myself one thank you very much coz I have no experience doing that (and wouldn't want to use my X2 as the first candidate card even though it is pretty much supposed to be a simple affair).

Edit: And I know I should have got the Sapphire 4870X2 that comes with like a million of these cables taped to various sides of the box and used as packaging material around the very card but I a) didn't know that it was coming to the shop I had intended to deal with all the way, b) was again too imaptient and only searched for it, and found it on NCIX after I'd already bought the VisionTek. Yeah, like probably 90% of this is my fault. Oh well. I'm still mad though and pose my question. Why???

Because you are an impatient idiot?

Well, often times when a particular adapter is not supplied with a product it is because it is not recommended to use. I would call VisionTek and ask them what the reasoning for not supplying this adapter is for. If it was simply forgotten to be packaged and they can send one out to you, or if it is not recommended to use such an adapter.

In your situation, if anything, i would recommend that you use a 2x 6pin PCI-e to 1x 8pin PCI-e power adapter, like this one in NewEgg's picture of the GTX280's packaging contents (the one just to the right of the RGB component adapter)

Yeah, I will call them and ask them what's up but the OCZ 900W ModXStream has 20A on each rail except one (that's 18A I think that is still not too bad) and is supposed to be able to handle 3 GeForce cards (8800GTs or GTXs) in SLI so considering that it should be able to handle a single 4870X2s peak board power of 280W. Will call support first thing next week all the same. Keep in mind the Sapphire 4870X2 comes with two molex to one 8pin PCI-E2 adaptor so it can't be that bad an idea, provided that you have a proper power supply on hand.

Thanks though, didn't know they had a cable like that. The GTX280 draws alot of juice I'm aware though so I'll have to ask the support at VisionTek about that first just in case I end up frying my 4870X2; they may pack the two molex to 8 pin with the Sapphire for a reason.

Yeah, tried it and I just got continuous beepin (not sure whether this was from the motherboard or the card) and a message on screen saying "WARNING , YOU HAVE NOT PROPERLY CONNECTED THE POWER CABLE TO THE CARD, PLEASE REFER TO THE QUICK START GUIDE" blinkin in time with the beeps at the top of the screen. The message is in a maroon/dark red/congealed blood/clotted blood colour signifying death and the dead weight status of your highly expensive card you may as well fling about and play freesbee with right after then.

That's what ya get for going with a low spec, no-name PSU ya cheap-ass, penny pinching fuck

Ya should have gotten the Corasir 1000HX. It's a better PSU, and comes with the 8-pin connectors.

OK...above said mostly in jest, only cause this IS the FWZ, and one MUST keep up apperances

Really tho, it does pay do bit of homework/research, especially since you DID spend a lot of $$. There are still a lot of "high end" PSUs that don't have the 8-pin, but it IS fairly new, and they just haven't had time to catch up to the newer vid cards.

Next thing ya know, instead of one 6 and one 8 pin, we will see TWO 8 pins, and then it be be playing catch up all over again.

Or they're just fucking lazy lol, but too true, gfx cards suck too much power nowadays and in any case there is always going to be a bottle neck somewhere whether at the CPU or the FSB or the card itself it doesen't matter, but then again even internal combustion engines used in almost all cars have an efficiency rating of like 35-40%, the most efficient having 50% efficiency, but you still definitely need ALL those parts in there to make it that efficient. Just because you use only 5% of your brain doesen't mean you're going to cut out the other 95% just because you don't need it (or don't want to pay for the nutrients it's going to take to maintains those parts of your brain, like you would even know where to start lol).

Quote:
The largest compression-ignition engines are two-strokes and are used in some locomotives and large ships. These particular engines use forced induction to scavenge the cylinders; an example of this type of motor is the Wartsila-Sulzer turbocharged two-stroke diesel as used in large container ships. It is the most efficient and powerful engine in the world with over 50% thermal efficiency. For comparison, the most efficient small four-stroke motors are around 43% thermal efficiency (SAE 900648); size is an advantage for efficiency due to the increase in the ratio of volume to area.

And I'd like to say having a 4870X2 in your system makes a hell of a statement be you at a lan, strip club or just in the middle of the bush somewhere not even plugged into power. It just yells out from the bowels of your case "I am man and don't you fucking forget that!!!!" even if your whole system is not even usin' like half of it's hidden potential.

Look at it this way. It just builds up the excitement you feel looking forward to Tuesday and being able to fire up your new rig. Makes you appreciate it more when it all works.

Yup, I have been getting better at pool though waiting for this here rig to come together, but I hate waiting for things such as this, though now I will have to learn. You're right will be less likely to take it for granted once I fire it up.

Is there any actual PSU that comes with the necessary cables for the 4870x2?

My Corsair 620HX has 2 6+2 connectors that I'm using for my 3870 X2 which uses one 6-pin and one 8-pin just like the 4870 X2.

The Corsair 750TX has 4 6+2 connections.

The Corsair 1000HX has 6 6+2 connections. Zardon uses this one in his 2 x 4870 X2 system.

There are a LOT of PSU's out there that have the necessary connections. You jut have to pick one that does.

sometimes those USB to Parrallel adapters works very well.... although i dont' recommend it (as it's iffy if it'll work)... because a more up to date printer will always be better.

Not for pro quality sound.... USB has some issues there. Either firewire for external or a dedicated internal card is the way to go for pro sound.

For games and such USB sound may be fine.... I don't know as I don't do the gaming stuff.

Jury rig your own bloody connector for that card Callandor, did it for my 9800GX2 and OCZ GXS 800 PSU. Worked like a charm.

if he doesn't know what wires go to what, he could possibly kill his card, probably PSU, and maybe MoBo if he did that

I actually know what goes where, all its missing is two ground (black) wires, just I've never done it and wouldn't want to first time on this system, like CDB said there's lots at stake if I make a booboo. There's a lady in my apartment building where I stays got 2 9800GX2s in SLI but she's already used all her adaptors. Her husband too who's got one 9800GX2. Saw me trashin the boxes I didn't need and asked about my rig one fine day.

as long as the right wires go to the right place, nothing wrong with making your own cables (i've done this a few too many times)

12V and ground x2 how hard is it

If you are looking for a decent power supply make sure they have 2 x 12 rails for SLI/Crossfire and if your running a Gigabyte mobo as I am remember to provide power to that socket on the mobo as well (4 pin fan configuration)
