You know, comparing the TBred to the NorthwoodB is like comparing Mice to Keyboards. Really, clockspeed and operations per second don't mean anything, anything at all. Intel's highend is the 2.53ghz Northwood B, AMD's is the TBred +2200, when you compare those to each other BECAUSE THEY ARE DIRECT COMPETITORS OF EACH OTHER, not because the P4 clocks faster or the AMD does more operations per second or the P4 costs more, you realize the P4 is just plain faster, regardless of price.
I've seen an 8mhz calculator processor perform matrix operations in an add function for a 64x64 matrix to another 64x64 matrix in two seconds, whereas computing that on any current processor could take more than 10 times that. It's all optimizations, the P4 is optimized for brute clock speed and SSE/SSE2, the TBred is optimized for operation per clock and 3dnow. The P4 is faster. End of story. All you people who argue about architectural advances and the like are dumb. Processors are not about the technology race, it's about money. Transmeta has 1ghz processors that run Palmtop computers infinitely faster than any AMD or Intel job, but since they only claim 1ghz and have hardly any marketing they lose out to the big boys. Buzzwords sell processors, not technology. It's sad but true. We could have had 10ghz processors by now but these companies consiously limit their new products to maximize profits out of their current ones. Both AMD and Intel are guilty of this. Using year old architectures with just slight clockspeed bumps sells processors, not new architectures. Sorry people. So stop complaining, P4 owns the performance crown, AMD owns the price-to-performance crown, P4 owns the heat/power crown, AMD owns the architecture crown. It's all even, and it's all done to make more money off of you people, the ones who NEED that extra 66mhz, or in the case of intel users that 133mhz FSB jump. AGH! |

YES!!! Gimmie that extra 66 Mhz - erm hang on.
I've been using *gasp* the same CPU *gasp* for over 1 year *gasp* - my little old AMD 1.4 is holding up-speedwise very nicely in the current crop of games. I'm trying to hold off changing CPU until DOOM3 hits the streets - or UT2003 really needs it

.....could you say the same about cars...
Lets take my Oldsmobile And lets take a ford... My car's weight is 2.5 tons The ford is 0.9 tons My cars got a 455 Engine V8 rated at about 4800 RPM The ford has a 2.2L engine rated at 6500 RPM My car does 0-60 in about 9 seconds The ford does 0-60 in about 5 Seconds My car does 0-100 in about 22 seconds the Ford does 0-100 in about 17 seconds Top speed for my car 135 MPH Top speed for the ford 112Mph My cars got 340 Horses Fords got 150ish.. who wins on a dino? you figure it out..... really It is apples and oranges.... i was just giving an example.... the ford could be way off.... but really, isn't it very comparable to intel vs AMD..... my car gausles gas... 20miles to a gallon..... the ford.... 30-40... however, i can pull..push do much more with the engine i've got and weight....comparable to the AMD... but the intell hasn't got the weight or the horses to push it....just has the speed to proves it's worth....

Well NASA felt that 400 mhz was too slow so they upgraded to 600 mhz ....then again that was 1024 proc's they upgraded in their supercomputer which makes for a nice increase in performance.

I have a life, balanced between work, home, socialising, clubbing, touring, and hobbies. If your's consists of work/school, PC PC PC PC that's your fault. Wake up, get dressed and go see the world. Don't buy a new CPU and mobo... Buy - and here's a radical concept - a PLANE ticket. Go ABROAD. Go see parts of the world you haven't seen before. (Hint to Americans, spending 3 days in the capital city of a given country, especially all 3 days in the hotel, does NOT mean you have 'done' the country. There is a lot more to it than that). Visit the Pyramids in Egypt, the Alps in Switzerland, the Lake District in England, watch the Northern Lights in Canada, take a trip down the Nile. Think.... My god, if brains were chocolate, you wouldn't have enough to make a Smartie. bait cast, sits back in the sunshine, waits for a bite. :-)

/offtopic no life post
ill certainly admit driverheaven has taken quite a bit of my life lately (and cyborgs), between updating the site, adding things, HTML, flash work, getting it running smoothly, server upgrades, issues and getting leaks etc before anyone else can get them ... but isnt it worth it ?? or are we wasting our time ? ![]() /end offtopic no life post |

Of course its worth it! The computer is the one we all love and care for through driver upgrades and new mods all installing with Tender Loving Care. Settling down to a new driver release sends shivers up my spine - is DVD playback finally working for me? Has the fog issue in Morrowind been cured? Then theres the online angle where we all help each other out, solving problems, discussing the merits of MSAA to SSAA and who's currently the latest pinup girl for us geeks.
