Much easier to indulge in mental masturbation with the smug that only be achieved by being a true Narcissistic Sociopath. But enough about labels, because labeling is another pastime not worth indulging in if you happen to work with people frequently. I have 82 colleagues all over the world that support software users from a phone, IM and in person at their workcenters. These are doctors, nurses, techs and clerks who all use rather cumbersome and sophisticated pieces of equipment and software that my company supports. If I for one minute thought I could label any of them, openly show frustration or ignore them because I didnt think they had any common sense or enough gray matter to fill a thimble, I would be out of a job. No, I just help them out so they can help others. But among each other we all pick on each other endlessly and exchange epithets and insults and poke fun because if we didnt, we would lose our sense of humour. Not a single one of us has RN or MD next to our names or in our CV. We all come from different backgrounds and have a desire to work for IBM I hope with the intention of helping users who have better things to do with simple computer, and software issues and help them learn something. I come to Dh with the sole intention of having fun, and I might have a singuler wit and accorrding to some, ECCENTRIC personality but I like help folks if I have the knowlege and if I dont, I f**king go find it or learn it. I would like to get into the tall weeds with my tech folks and learn more about the emerging technologies and networks they support, but I would rather spend it with people, helping them and enjoying the work. I hope you dont take offense, but I work with people that lose precious time everyday fretting over "stupid questions" and "why cant they just google that", but then I am in the business of helping others and it isnt fair to compare myself with anyone else. I like DH because the staff help folks here, even the Editor in Chief when he has the time. Perhaps one day you might really need help, and hope someone here is of service to you, without openly rendering any judgement on your behalf. we all started somewhere.

I agree. I had to find my way around all by myself. Should be the same for them too.

Re: Gawd almighty, please make people less stupid!
While this is true, Falstaff, there are people that ask the same thing over and over, and over again, forever. That's what I ran into as a guitar building instructor...... it wasn't that they didn't catch it the first time, they just refused to learn...... These were the guys that played air-guitar all through high school, flunked out, couldn't play guitar worth a damn, couldn't get into a regular collage, so decided building guitars was the way to go......
Mom and Dad wanted them out of the house and they got sent to us.....I ran into a bunch of this type at the custom boot making company I worked for also. Like "playing stupid" was a way of life........... The 14th time you have to tell the same person how long a boot lace was, get's a little old. Especially after you made a benchmark on their work bench and labeled it appropriately. Granted, this is not a customer-tech relationship...... it was supposed to be tech-tech which made it more frustrating.

I've heard of that before. You learn it in school when the teacher calls on you. They also "say" it pays to listen.
