that would overload my 250w power supply. (well, at least the only other HDD's i have available are 10000rpm scsi's.)

winxp is on a 10gb 5400rpm, i'm trying to get it to a 7200rpm X2 raid array... i'd have to throw in a scsi and install win98 just to get a copy of all files (including system)...

and that still won't get winxp to let my capture driver work...

before you install xp on the array...use the slow-arsed hdd with xp installed to stripe your array @ 16k using adm tools>computer management>disk management ...then install xp over it. you should notice a major improvement benching with atto or sisoft sandra.

then disable all your cd/cdr/dvdroms, fans, and vibrators from your power supply and copy/paste your porn/mp3/whatever over to your array.

You probably need a more capable power supply.

maybe i'm having a hard time explaining myself.

specs:

asus a7v133, 1009 bios (kt133a)
amd athlon tbird 1.0ghz at 1.13
768mb pc133 ram
10gb quantum fireball ata66 5400rpm
2x30gb maxtor ata100 7200rpm raid 0 (promise pdc20265r)
2x30xdvd
12x10x32xcdrw
asus v8200 deluxe geforce3 @ 220/520 (nv20, a5)
sound blaster live value
56k lucent win modem
10/100 accton 1207d
sigma designs realmagic hollywood plus (em8300)
250w power man psu

previous working setup:
win98se on primary (active) raid partition (c
backup on primary (non-active) 10gb standalone partition (d
video files on secondary raid partition (e

current working setup:
winxp on primary (active) 10gb standalone partition (c
nothing on primary (active) raid partition (f
backup and video files on secondary raid partition (g

this is the setup i want:
winxp on primary (active) raid partition (c
backup on primary (non-active) 10gb standalone partition (d
video files on secondary raid partition (any drive letter, i don't care)

i can't install winxp to the primary (active) raid partition, due to god knows what reason.
i can't make an exact copy of the primary (active) 10gb standalone drive to the primary (active) raid partition due to winxp not letting me copy files in use, due to xcopy not copying system/hidden/long files...
i can't install winxp to the raid array while running winxp on the 10gb standalone.

the psu is enough for what i'm running. i think i've also had one of the 10000 rpm scsi drives running with all the previously mentioned hardware just fine, but it's too much of a hassle setting everything up and installing all the needed drivers for win98 just to copy winxp over, and i'm not even guaranteed that that will work.

also updating capture drivers. winxp won't boot with any video driver other than the default. that right there is enough to make me not even care about winxp any more. good thing i didn't waste my money on buying it.

1) stripe your array first via adm tools>comp management>disk management>format>whatever stripe size you desire (i like 16k personally) ...with everything as it is using your current xp setup on the standalone hdd. ***

2) shutdown

3) remove the standalone hdd...manually from mobo and in bios

4) boot to xp installation cd

5) make sure you have the promise fasttrac drivers on a floppy disk handy and press F6 when it asks if you need to install any disk management devices right at the beginning

6) install xp on the array

7) install 4n1s, george breese's latency patch, dx8.1, vid drivers, and win patches and updates

8) shutdown and reattach the standalone hdd...cut/paste all your porn over to the array.

***use fdisk or partition magic pro to partition your array prior to this step

at step 6, it will bluescreen before the "select drive" dialogue will show.

even if the install to the raid array worked, winxp would freeze on bootup immediately after installing video drivers.
