Really? only 8%?

I've been fuming ever since I saw this a little bit ago on one of my RSS feeds. Google has been pushing chrome since it came out and it hasn't really taken off as well as they would have liked it seems, or as well as it should have IMO. Anyway, they asked 50 people off the street in Times Square, NY the most basic of questions about the internet: "What is a Browser?"

Only 8% knew.

Here's the youtube:

If you ask an out of context question you get an out of context answer. Even a way out of left field answer from those that are trying to out smart themselves.

Maybe "fuming" is a bit of a hyperbole, but it took me aback nonetheless. I have to think positively about it though. I mean, because of these kinds of people there's a lot of money to be made, right?

Its true, Pro and I have made a pretty penny of this kind of stuff. We might just have to start being chromes street team, uninstalling browsers whenever we visit anyone and installing chrome in its place. Maybe even replacing the chrome icon with a big E and telling people its the "new look" of internet explorer.

Is chrome that much better then say, firefox?

I use firefox for like 2 years now and I love it. Even use the noscript addon and the weatherforecast thing.. Absolutely wonderfull..
I just can't imagine any browser topping that to be honest

I don't really see how these were out of context questions.. What is a browser? is pretty straightforward and can be answered pretty straightforward -> the program to surf the internet.

Or did I just make a fool out of myself now

You could have upgraded to IE8................ and then deleted it. Would have been more empowering, No?

There are other definitions of "browser". So, when you straight out ask a question like, "What is a browser?", you are bound to get a bunch of different answers if you don't put that question into context.

"What is or name a web/Internet browser?"
"What is or name a file browser?"
"What is a data browser?" (believe it or not a search engine could be considered a browser as it's a program designed to search for data.. so to the people that said Google.. you were right.. technically)
"What is a person, animal, or thing that browses?"
"What is a cross-browser?"

Context, my man. Without it a simple question like, "Are you a dick?" could net you some interesting answers.

Re: Really? only 8%?

Tipstaff, I know where you're coming from, because I think like that as well. Everything is relative. However, with that in mind, I also have the life experience to know the probability of a context and what people are most likely asking me.

When someone asks you what a browser is, the hands-down, more-than-likely context will be an internet browser such as Firefox, Chrome, and the devil spawn IE. Not to mention if someone on the street did actually mention something such as a "data browser" or file browser, they would have probably asked or had been given some clarification. Certainly if any of that came up at all, Google wouldn't have put it into the final cut that we just watched, as it would confuse anyone watching it and muddle the flow of the video.

Yes, everything is contextual. I've gotten into straight-up arguments with people on many occasions and, in my opinion, I was right, because I played that card. But at the core of things, most people only think of one context when asked "What is a browser".

Always go with best-case.

Re: Really? only 8%?

Sounds like an excuse from Google..."people don't even know what a browser is of course they haven't heard of Chrome!"

I've also forcibly installed Firefox on at least 4 PC's so I liked that one guys answer.

You've got a point, but in this video I thought it was pretty clear what was meant. But I understand not all people know as much of the computer stuff as we do on DH ^^
