Are you being yourself or how other people say you should be?

I am sick of how people all band together AND ALL DO THE SAME THINGS!!!!

They are acting like robots and its sick!!!! (Oh "Get an Ipod",so they do,etc...)

I try to be myself... I DONT GIVE A FUCK WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS!!!

I am not a puppet performing for thier dinner!

Is there anybody on here who admits that they themselves conform to a stereotype or are you yourself?

I am myself, but I am "stereotyped" by others for the way I look......

Re: Stereotypes - Are You Being Yourself?

being yourself is how other people say you should be.
in a interview for a new job for example.
with all these people on earth it is difficult to be seen as a unique person.
'doin my own way' is a stereotype, too. like sinatra or a punk musician.
go your own way but dont preach it. you only can achieve from other people what you are willing to give.
but... i'm on the way to the 'you laugh...you loose thread', so i dont realy care.

Re: Stereotypes - Are You Being Yourself?

I'm 100% myself, i refuse to cater to a stereotype. However i'm constantly stereotyped, In the UK according to the press -

ALL teenagers are on every kind of drug going,
we're all alcoholics,
we're all violent,
we're all under-educated,
we all carry knives,
we all have no disregard for discipline or authority,
those of us that can drive are always driving like we're trying to kill ourselves,
we all listen to crap music,
we all mug people and steal.

Yeah, the list just goes on,
and on,
and on.

I don't do drugs anymore, i cleaned up my act years ago, i'm anything but violent, i like to consider myself highly educated both from college and learning in my own time, as much as i don't like it; i cater to those in authority, I drive sensibly and safely, i listen to classic rock and metal a lot of the time (If you can call that crap you need your head checking lol) and i don't steal.

Sometimes it does help me to get stupid people that believe the stereotype to leave me alone when they're causing hassle; "Oh shut up and lemme enjoy my 24 crate of beer to myself and shoot up some smack before i pull my knife and ram it up your arse whilst i listen to some bassline/dubstep music as i'm nickin' yer' wallet"

Re: Stereotypes - Are You Being Yourself?

It's particularly noticeable in school groups - one person might do something, others might laugh and we will all join in, even if it is not something you would normally do yourself.

I think I'm quite susceptible to it, but it's nothing huge like "I'm gonna smoke because my friend smokes and he's cool now"

(imo smoking is just stupid and dumb but I don't want to make an argument about that here.)

Be yourself, do what you want, but remember that you might regret it later.

People, when they come together, normally do the same thing. I mean, if you're going to dinner with people, you'll eat and talk, and so on. You will also normally go together with people who are similar to you to some extent.

If you don't like going with people and sharing the things they do, then you're anti-social, and that's okay. Nobody should force you to hang around with people if you don't want to.

If you don't give a fuck about what others think then you're a jerk, because everyone should have a right to their opinions and way of behaviour (as long as they don't hurt others), even if they differ from yours. You should find your place out of strength and your feeling for what's right, instead of just dismissing other's opinions.

And regarding the iPod (or these days, the iPad), I don't know why people have problems with others buying certain devices. Someone buys them, other people see them and think they're cool and buy them too. That's perfectly normal.

Re: Stereotypes - Are You Being Yourself?

As someone who didn't really break bad when I was a kid, I regret having not done anything interesting when I was younger (I'm 24 now, some would say young but believe me it makes a difference if you don't enjoy your life when you're supposed in your teens when the consequences can be a lot less serious).

Of course if you do enjoy yourself when you're younger, you feel guilty about having done all that stuff when you grow older and know more. So either way you're gonna end up regretting something.

There are no regrets anymore. I quit doing that. I'm living instead!

Same here.. although I am 22, I haven't really 'broken bad' either as you say. Don't know if I should regret it or be happy I didn't. At the moment I am just taking life as it comes and making the most of it, while also focussing on my study and trying to get my degree.

If this puts me in a stereotype, so be it.. I don't care at all. I'm just myself.

Even "followers" are being themselves, in a sense. You can't act as a wolf if you're a sheep.

Re: Stereotypes - Are You Being Yourself?

You're all unique individuals...just like everybody else.

Who's to say that the people in this thread wouldn't be looked at as computer geeks, all meeting in one place to discuss our geeky geek interests? Stereotypes abound so I wouldn't get too hung up on them unless they are truly detrimental.

Do what you enjoy regardless of what people think, not what people think regardless of whether or not you enjoy it.

I'm happy as a pig in a big ol' pile of poo if people want to look at me as a geek or a nerd although I don't fit the typical phsyical stereotype but I kind of get a kick out of it. It's a part of what makes me me.

Those who know me know that I'm about and that's all that matters.
