nVidia vs 3dfx ~~~ nVidia vs Ati

You know this would come up at some point...the mentioning of 3dfx in this part of the forums. (I know I'll get all sorts of hell for doing it too)

I find it interesting that when the Awesome Battle between 3dfx (I was on 3dfx's side) and nVidia was going on, people were bitching back and forth about "ImageQuality" and "FPS". And now 3dfx is layed to rest (well sort of...their stock is still being traded, and you can buy Voodoo5 cards on eBay) and a new war has begun...the war between nVidia and ATi. And what are the 2 major things we hear between the war? ImageQuality and FPS. Its been what...2yrs almost since we heard that 3dfx was going to be purchased by nVidia (if you go off the rumors then almost 2 1/2yrs)? 2 freakin years go by, and nVidia STILL hasn't got it right??? And ATi is in the same boat on this. While the battle was being fought between 3dfx & nVidia, what was ATi doing?? They were considered (by many) to be a 3rd choice in this battle. ATi was no where NEAR the speed of either company, but they did have ImageQuality (on the DVD side of things and 2D). So ATi tries to play catch-up and becomes "more agressive" (Fury / Fury MAXX) and ends up making several mistakes. But still ATi is able to barely hang on to the fact that they have better 2D/DVD qualtiy over 3dfx/nVidia.

So 3dfx is gone...nVidia and ATi heat up. ATi makes another mistake with their drivers (Quake3/8500), and are busted big time. And most of us are thinking...WTF?? What the hell has ATi been doing all this time?? If they want to play with the big boys, they can't be pulling this bullshit driver crap trying to 'boost' FPS in Q3A! nVidia sits back for a few moments to laugh at ATi. That is until ATi released the NEW Drivers. nVidia starts to sweat a bit more, so in order to keep their Crown they are FORCED to speed up production (NV30), and kill the GF Series all together. (otherwise you have the R300 vs an O'Ced 4600)

So ATi has "caught up" in the FPS race (assuming R300 comes through), and now nVidia is scared. They are no longer the "fastest card with 32bit color", they have a pretty big fight on their hands. ATi is already known for DV editing, so what is nVidia to do? Play the Speed Game like 3dfx did?? Then you also have Matrox coming in to the picture. I think ATi and nVidia both need to take a few lessons in IQ from Matrox! I think nVidia has put themselves in a corner (much like 3dfx did once), and unless they do something quick, nVidia will follow 3dfx very shortly.

Thing is nVidia always seems to keep their products on schedule unlike 3dfx during the V5 days. I'm glad to see nVidia sweating it. I hope with the new vid cards coming out causes all the companies to sweat some and motivate them to provide great products plus support.

Ironically, my voodoo 3 3000 agp is pulling better frames in newer games then the geforce 2 mx200.....go figure....
