I don't come to this forum much as I pretty much take things in stride and don't get too bent out of shape very often. But, I just had a development that has me spitting fire and stomping around the house....and just before Christmas, too!
About a week and a half ago someone my son knows ...very well, in fact... asked him if I could build a PC for him in order to play Star Trek Online. I have had a second PC here I was using ... barely ... only for back up situations in order to get online if I had trouble with my main rig. I also had other components I could draw from in order to put together a really decent PC using Windows 7 x64 for him. I gave a price estimate of $250 since I had almost everything I would need to get it together...from the case, PSU, mobo, RAM, video card, HDD, etc. And, installed with W-7 x64. Got the sucker together last night, downloaded STO client, got it all set up and running on my 32-inch LCD TV at 1080p. The game plays and looks really good! My son was quite impressed with the performance and overall appearance. So, I got the package all ready for my son to deliver. "There may be issues," my son later told me. Now, after all this time and effort, the guy isn't sure he wants to take it. He hemming and hawing on the price now. And, NO, I'm not cutting the price after all this time and effort. Not when I was told that the ONLY game he was interested in playing is STO and the system plays it in fantastic fashion. So, I'm not in the best of moods just now and have sent word I'm not spending anymore time and/or effort on this for him. Either he takes it as was agreed upon or I find another use for it. |

Re: Letting Off Some Steam....
I understand your frustration, Dyre. What I'm thinking is that $250 is more than fair for even a half decent PC, so, even if the deal goes south, I don't think that you'd have problem if you put an add somewhere like Craigslist. So, that guy is a punk, but don't let that spoil your festive mood.

Re: Letting Off Some Steam....
Man that's messed up, but like Ivan said you should be able to sell it online for around the same price.

Re: Letting Off Some Steam....
Yeah, I was being very generous with this guy, too, since he's a "friend" of the family. As it stands now, he's not much of a friend to ME, though!
He sent a message through my son asking a few more details. Which, I didn't mind answering. But, I did say this is the last bit of effort I'm spending on it. He either wants it or he doesn't. |

Some guys can really be tools..... I'd say you just sorted out your secondary/backup system. Let him find something else.

Re: Letting Off Some Steam....
Man that seriously blows, $250 is a great deal for a gaming rig of any capacity and now he's umming and awwing about the price? I'd call the deal off, Let him source his own damned system and keep that one to sell
![]() On a more thread jacking type note (it says letting off steam thought i'd join in ) had a customer phone up the other night, My colleague spoke to the guy and he named me saying i'd authorised a free pizza for his next order, which my colleague gave out. When i got back off a delivery i was told what had happened, unfortunately i'd already authorised the free pizza nearly 2 weeks ago so i was absolutely raging because the note i'd left out about the customer had been thrown in the bin by someone else. This guy suddenly decided to start bragging all over Facebook about how easy it is to scam us (boss man found his posts somehow, don't really wanna know how ). I knew exactly what was gonna happen, 4 more customers rang up the same hour from the same street, all named me and tried to scam free food, We blew them all off because luckily our EPOS system tracks their order count and none of them had ordered before. That's not what pissed me off the most, On my way to another delivery i pulled over to take a call and was sat there for 10 minutes whilst my boss went APESHIT at me, and to add insult to injury he yelled "WHY ARE YOU TAKING SO LONG ON A DELIVERY", Explained that i pulled over and he then said something along the lines of i'm wasting time by pulling over to take a call, when i should have a hands free kit subsequent shouting match about that ensued also.Helluva night

I'd know what i'd tell him and be assured it would not be too polite.. I have been in a similar position (not building a pc) but i had a pc that i wanted to sell.. The husband of my eldest sister stepped in and said a freind of mine is willing to by the pc im seliing... At the time it were £350 (willing to give a little) i accepted £325... For a Packard Bell P4 set up... As no one will know he is a Tight arsed git and will do anything to make cash ( i don't mean illegaly) if he can make some cash and bank it he will do so. A week later i got the cash for the pc and the transfer were all ok.. Untill i looked at his ebay account... What i saw on his account for sale via ebay. A) the CPU (he switched) B) the Memory (He switched for lower perfomance) C) the GC (Again he switched for a much older card) And all of these he sold for himself... Trust me if a freind of a friend is bad enough,Try having a family member who is willing to make a few pounds for himself is worse... He is a very smugg git that does not know that the whole of my family does not like him at all.....Even to the point that his wife (my older sis) over the years her character has changed to the point we don't know here any more. |

Re: Letting Off Some Steam....
Very interesting reading so from the rest of you!
Well, here's where it stands with my situation at the moment: Seeing as it's Christmas and he has a wife (maybe HIS boss!) and two kids to take care of by being "Santa", I'm holding the PC for him until after New Years. If, by then, there's no firm deal....meaning CASH in hand....the whole deal becomes void and I'll do just what I want to do with the PC. Having raised FOUR kids, I do know what it's like to come up with cash around the holidays, so, that's the main reason I'm being a gentleman about the matter. Will update once the whole issue is resolved.... one way or the other. And, while I'm at it, Merry Christmas to the whole lot of you...whether you celebrate it or not, just be nice, OK?

Re: Letting Off Some Steam....
This story has a happy ending. (I LOVE happy endings!!!)
I found out that one of the big concerns the guy had was his DSL Internet. It's very, VERY poor where he lives. But, since he has AT&T with the whole package, he doesn't want to change things. And, since the only reason he wants the PC is to be able to play Star Trek Online, that became a major concern. So, my older son took the system to his house, set it up and tested it. The worst part of the whole experience was the huge patch that needed to be installed which took a very long time to complete. BUT, once it did, they set up and played STO for awhile and everything was completely acceptable. So, I now have the cash in hand and the system meets his approval. <The END> <<Will they live happily ever after?>> |

Tell me you didn't offer him your own personal warranty on the system for any serious length of time.

Re: Letting Off Some Steam....
I came in tonight and found my son playing Star Trek Online.
AND, so glad to have him tell me that the guy who bought the PC was also online playing...and enjoying it, too. So, yep, I'm glad it all worked out in the end. |
