Default Post Tomshardware sinks again!

Tomshardware Editorial

My response:

I find your rather mixed and confused editorial on AMD very disturbing.

I would like to point out that AMD did in fact turn things around. AMD brought affordable computers to the masses and overlooking recent events AMD led intel in raw performance. The fact of the matter is that for the cost AMD still delivers much more performance than Intel.

Also i would point out that AMD is singlehandedly responsible for the rise of chipset and graphics manufacturers in recent times. This is both directly and indirectly. Firstly VIA rose to fame, and a titanic market share of chipsets, through its KT series of AMD chipsets. This in turn gave VIA the capital to create the P4x series chipsets (the current P4 performance leaders none the less) and gave VIA the ability to battle Intel in court. Second: AMD gave rise to the enthusiast market, which in turn led to the graphics board market explosion. Without the enthusiast Nvidia and ATI would have been peddling their boards to a few wealthy individuals.

I can not stress enough the importance of AMD in todays market. Enthusiast computer sales rest nearly entirely on the availability of cheap components of every kind. If Intel P4's were the only option (which cost $500+) it wouldn't matter how cheap ATI's R85k would be.

As a matter of fact, despite dire predictions and market reports that are (what..) 3% under expectations? i would predict that AMD is doing pretty well. So what if AMD has no OEM market share? Dell and Hpaq aren't exactly going to last much longer. Within the last 2 months 3 of my acquantances and coworkers have asked me for support in custom building their own computer. It seems that no one is interested in buying an off the shelf system any more.

Now does this mean that Intel is going out of business? No, most certainly not... major corporations, including my place of work, buy intel computers. Why? You just can't beat Dells server warranty. What i am saying is that AMD is losing on the home front. (pun intended)

And as for these Intel enthusiast computers... well they are simply nowhere to be found. No one in my area owns such a box, except for a handufl who are still running P3's from back in the day.

So thats it... thats my 2.... (rather 2000) cents.

Good day.

I know that a good few of you have Intel boxes.. but i won't respond to flames because this letter is about my experiences and my opinions.

Useful information ... maybe... but the editorials on that site are pretty bad.

I would say that THG's life is starting to fade.

A mod war cool. This is the closest thing we will ever get to the great OP-Wars of Alamak chat.

If u dont know what it is(was?? dunno), it was the biggest web based chat zone in the world back in 95-96 when I was there. I was one of the firs dudes to sign op for operator, and a year later the OP-Wars started. MAN that was fun, baning and kicking eachother and because i was a COP(Comitee Operator) I could de-op every body.

At this time there were over 80K daily users and a few thousand OPs. Man those were the days.

I remember once when I saw an ariabian super OP ban sombody for saying "fvck". And in the ban reason he said, FVCK OFF!!!. So I thought, hey Im goin into the ariabian room and I banned the operator.

At the time nobody in the arabian room knew that I was a COP.(COPs could change their name). So everybody thought I was an ivading Operator.

So I saw a hell of alot of "XXXX tried to ban you." But noone could ban a COP so a second later I got alot ot "OOPS" and "Sorry plz dont ban me" messages because they knew I could see what they did. Then I banned them all for a few days and closed the arabian room

Oh.... rant over. Continue the war

Yeah well the problem is that ALOT of people not much into tech go to anand and tom and read. And pretty often therer is either BS info on their site, or they present it a way that misleads the average useer.

Sharky's is handy for the CPU and RAM price lists. Beyond that, unless you're planning a career as a lemming, you're better off looking for public reviews of the hardware you're wanting anyway.

Ah yes, the age old lemming question....

Are you sure beer has been round for 6000 yrs? I thought it came about somewhere round the eastern block 1000years ago. Unless perhaps you are reffering to that Egyptian brew.... hmmm... but i don't think thats beer.

I admit that this THG article was extremely biased, but I think he had some good points. How can AMD expect to get anywhere if the "average-user" OEMs such as Dell don't support them? If AMD were to get Dell's and other OEMs' support, sales would rise and they'd be an overall more successful company.

(I'm not biased towards Intel or anything, just read my sig.)

Yeah, well thats the thing... IF AMD got dell and hpaq behind them ... lol. Well i think its enough to say that AMD will live on due to the Enthusiast market, and particurlarly because a lot of people (like me) are pushing hommade computers.

It's pretty clear that an OEM (due to the way corporations compete) will have to choose a brand of processor. Therefore it will either be choosing AMD or Intel, and its not good to have a flaky track record. Let me explain: currently who is the performance leader AMD or Intel? Yeah there have been thousands of pages of arguments on this forum alone dedicated to that issue. What does this mean? There is no consensus.... thus there is no clear winner. So who should the OEM choose? That's simply unclear.

Ok . so lets take it on a either or basis. If an OEM goes with AMD ... they have just cut off the path back to intel... that seems pretty obvious to me. So what happens if Intel comes out on top? They can't go back and they are screwed. Case 2: the OEM sticks with Intel. Nothing bad happens and then AMD scores a KO with their new chip. The OEM switches to AMD and everyone is happy.

Clearly the second option is wiser for the OEM.

What will wind up happening? Oh i believe in the ClawHammer.... but i doubt anyone will be ditching Intel just yet. In my opinion the OEM's will start to split, in a style oh-so-close to ATI vs. Nvidia or Via vs. Intel.

I believe that AMD has its work cut out for it.... and that the enthusiast can help by supporting AMD in that machine freak sort of way. Thats why i have beef with that article, because it degrades the hardware community's role.

-------------------------
addendum:
I am most certainly not here to comment on THG's ethics, and it would be unwise to say that anyone is "bribed". They do their job and they have their opinions, i simply disagree with them. And yes i do appologize for stating things so harshly, particurlarly in the post heading...

Dell may never support AMD, but Compaq has had a long history of supporting AMD. HP supports 'em, too. Gateway chickened out, but give it time; they'll be back. Rumors indicate that Sun may pick up the Opeteron for low-end servers and if that happens, it will certainly legitimize AMD in the eyes of business users.

Dunno about Sun m8... I mean yeah, they might use AMD in their low-end servers great, but I still doubt that it will be as efficient as the UltraSPARC II / III CPU. Also Sun, like Dell and CPaq, has been quite sluggish in the market these days, therefore buyers might not be interested in buying such new hardware. However, if your predictions are right, I'd be the first to organize a AMD party, kinda like the Mozilla party not too long ago.
