What's up with AMD? (and some things that irk me)

Does anyone know any news of when the next AMD chip will be out? It just feels like Intel is moving forward, while AMD isn't. I've searched far and wide, and the only talk is of the Hammers, which are months away, while the gap between the best of both camps is widening. I like it when they are near each other in performance, so I feel they need to compete hard, instead of rest on their laurels . . .

Now . . . I really bloody hope that they don't call their next chip "Athlon," but it's the only name I see in their press releases. Athlon, just Athlon.

*reading minds of AMD marketing dept* "I have a great idea for a name for this next-gen, 64-bit capable chip we're gonna sell. Let's call it the EXACT SAME thing we called a lesser chip we sold long ago!!"
Seriously, they can't come up with anything better? Not even a measly "Athlon-64" or something? OK, for K7 you come up with Athlon, then XP/MP variants, good . . . 8th-gen comes around, and you're able to come up with Opteron for the MP's, but your brain-juice runs out after that? If nothing else, at least call it Hammer . . . .

That reminds me, why DON'T these companies ever use the code-names for marketing names? Some of them DO sound better than just incrementing the number next to the name, don't they? (pentium: 1 - 4, K6: 1 - 3) Katmai, Coppermine, Mendocino, Spifire, Morgan, Deschutes, Sharptooth, Covington, Klamath, Thunderbird, Palomino, ClawHammer, etc... A wealth of names out there, but none are cool enough? Pentium 2 + 1 = 3 is better than all those names?

What's with that one, anyway? Another misleading, stupid name change. Pentium 3 was almost the same damned thing as Pentium 2 (which was almost the same as Pro . . . .) Were they so deperate for perceived supremacy that a relatively minor change in their chip called for a overblown name change? They had Pentium, then Pentium-MMX. Couldn't they have Pentium2, then Pentium2-SSE?

One last thing.... I read articles and reviews of stuff on the web, you might also. Now why is it that whenever there's a comparison across multiple items using benchmarks, I find the item I own in the chart, and my own results are ALWAYS lower than theirs? Every Single Time. And I'm not saying .003% lower, I'm saying lower. Usually closer to the item below the one I'm looking at. It just gives me the feeling that there's something wrong in my universe . . . .

PS. The very first time I heard the name Opteron, I immediately pictured the words Optiplex + Celeron. I don't know why, and I still can't stop thinking of that association every time I hear Opteron.

We should see 2600+ (2.07GHz?) out by the end of the year. We can also expect to see Barton, a 512K cache version of the Athlon out by the same time.

It's impossible to claim that AMD is ahead of Intel performance-wise, but I think that that is largely a moot point. Personally, I don't feel like spending $600 on Intel's best just so I can be a few percentage points faster than AMD's $200 2200+.

A lot of you naysayers need to realize that most people don't really care. I mean, you'll see a lot of enthusiasts complaining how AMD is falling behind and how they're losing it, and how Intel is going to wipe them out. Falling behind a few perfomances notches is not the end of the world. Look at ATi. Look where they are now. Consumers aren't interested in a 2.8GHz Pentium 4, only enthusiasts are. And not even all enthusiasts care.

So quit worrying. AMD has a screamin' fast processor out that you can nab for little money. Intel has a SCREAMIN' fast processor out that can be had for a lot of money.

Well, um, what were the last five Intel desktop processors called? PENTIUM. There's strength in brand-recognition. That's why they don't stick with code-names. Although, I have to say, AMD Hammer sounds awesome; maybe it reminds too many people of the rapper. That said, I think they oughta tack a "-64" onto the end of the Athlon name, but for most people, the performance rating of 3800+ oughta give it away.

The Sledgehammer-based processor will not be called Athlon, it wil be called the "Opteron."

It's hard to beat a 1.8A overclocked to 2.4 though.

Personally I'd be happy with a T-bred at 2 ghz. I think that would do for a year or so. I'm not sure that would be enough to push a 9700 to it's full potential though.

intelligence has no quota, unfortunately. it is a set constant (provided, you don't do drugs) and does not go down (fortunately for you anyway, otherwise you'd be in the negatives), and it does not go up (VERY unfortunate for you, as a 2 point addition to your i.q. would be a 200% increase).
