.... I must admit to a few teething problems at the beginning, especially with drivers, but apart from one or two niggling problems that Im trying to sort out through this forum I would never go back to 98/Me

XP is great if you can find all your drivers again.

To enable the classic Win 9x look: Double click My Computer > select Advanced tab > select settings button under Performance > Under Visual Effects tab select Adjust for best performance. To select classic start up menu: Right click on Start > select start menu tab > tick classic Start Menu. When this is done go to this web site www.tweakxp.com for more tweaks to get your XP purring. I too had problems when I first moved over to XP. Now after several months of continued use I find myself going to Win 98se less. Sorry for the all caps in the balloon tips section, it was copied from a document I have collected throughout the net on XP tips.

Do yourself a favor and learn how to use/tweak a computer. Once XP is setup correctly it is superior to the OS's before it (from microsoft). WOOT! |

windows xp is 70% slower than win98se for bootup. windows xp is 30% slower than win98se for starting applications windows xp is 10% slower than win98se for running applications windows xp is 900% more likely to crash than win98se for any use. the way they did those tests was to run as many things in the background as they could, and that's where win98se falls behind. i run explorer, systray, and rundll in the background, and nothing else. |

?? 28 Days uptime is what you call special ?? If it's uptime you want there's enough MS&others OS's out there that will have uptime of years..that doesn't say it's a good OS..neither is having features..a good OS is one that does the job it's supposed to do without being to difficult to setup, without too many errors and in the fastest time..
Still i'm not judging XP since i don't use it..main reason for not using being that my favourite game does not run correctly under XP + I've heard of more things that don't work under XP.

I just turn mine on and off as needed I mean it only takes like 38seconds to boot and leaving it on while I'm not at it is just a waste of energy>>>

thats the thing... that win98 machine is our server and an overflow workstation. i'm keeping it on all the time because it is also folding. the reason why i posted the uptime was to show that win98se is very stable if you know how to use it.
uptime is now... 54 days... |

as long as it works well for you thats great, but I am the type to try and always have the newest techie crap and win 98 just would not be able to keep up with me...

Freedom is a feature.
|
The thing I hate the most at XP is integrating drivers into it, but drivers which are not complete and do not work good. F***ing Radeon 8500 Series driver that is automatically installed - it would be better without any drivers - size of whole OS installation would be smaller, and integrated drvs are usually useless (except for Vortex/Vortex2).

Installed Win XP last week..it's better than expected i think..driver rollback is a nice one, lack of custom install is indeed a bad one.
"New" interface is good, will be easier again for people to start using a pc under XP than it used to be under 98. Like the ability to turn of the "standard" desktop items, takes some getting used to but at least the desktop is less crowded.. Like the quick boot, lot better than NT, W2k of 9x haven't timed it yet but it looks faster anyway..
