Why are some people so ignorant to certain types of music?

This is something that has baffled me for quite a long time. I am black(not American, cuz i am originally from Trinidad and Tobago) but i listen to almost any kind of music, cuz that's all it is to me, MUSIC!!! I enjoy it a lot and i like to try different kinds of music from time to time. Anyways, lately i've been listening to a lot of rock and occasionally i have carried a few of my cd's to work and on some occasions some of the other black workers wanted to see what i was listening to. But on almost all occasions they all had something stupid, negative and ignorant to say about the music i listen to. Like one time i was playing Deftones - White Pony and a guy wanted to listen to it and said, "WTF is this shit that u're listening to?" or one time i was listening to some System Of A Down - Toxicity and 2 clowns called it satanic music and it was the 1st track of the cd - Prison Song. How the fuck is that satanic music??? Even yesterday i had Slipknot's debut cd and their latest: Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses and in earlier in the day one guy said that it had subliminal messages in it and then at the end of the nite my supervisior happened to ask me to see my headphones cuz he wanted to check them out and i happened to be playing their debut album and his reaction was the same as the other clowns, "WTF are u listening to?". Honestly i think people should shut the fuck up with their opinions sometimes. Most of them listen to rap, which i think most of it is crap, but i don't go shouting that everytime i hear them singing a song or playing a cd in their cars. I don't let it bother me, but yet all of these clowns have something fucking stupid to say about me listening to rock. One even called it, "White people's music" WTF??? And rap, r&b, hip/hop is "Black people's music"??? All Dumbasses imo... To me music is music, it's just there's different kinds of music. What do u guys think about these idiots and others like them who r soo muscially ignorant and stupid?

One question. WHO invented Rock & Roll? The thing I find the funniest is how music seems to influence how people behave & dress too. I listen to almost everything, though I do have my favorites. However, I don't favor rap but I do like Jay-Z. The reason I like him so much is his music is just different. Besides these folks don't have a clue what Satanic music is....let them listen to some Deicide. Now that is satanic!!!

nice question u asked, necrosis. i do believe it was black people that invented it. i remember seeing someone (i think it was VH1) interviewing Lenny Kravitz and asked him a similar ? about black peoples' opinion of him playing rock music. Don't really remember his response to this, but i did remember him saying that is was black people who invented rock & roll in the 1st place. It's just fucking stupid that people label certain types of music to certain races. Fucking idiots!!!!

i totally agree with you. people are retarded musically speaking usually. when i tell people i listen to dance music they're like "ohhh, techno" i'm like "no, i hate techno"... they don't get it. i hate anything progressive, and things without words drive me nuts. i don't have the attention span to listen to the same shit for 20 minutes, but they all make fun of music i listen to because it all "sounds the same" -- no, dance music doesn't. i can see where they would think that from some shitty techno songs, but honestly that's just retarded. making a claim such as this is as crazy as making the claim "all rock music sounds the same".

oh well, that's just life i guess. a lot of people think music is satanic when it really isn't... and a lot of people enjoy songs that say things they are very much against. perfect example is my mom. she listens to rock and contemporary christian music. she is pretty strong in her christian beliefs... and she gets mad when i listen to some things like the offspring when he spazes out and says "you stupid dumbshit goddamn motherfucker" -- yet she enjoys the song judith by a perfect circle. little does she know in this song he is singing "so fuck your god, your lord, your christ, even though he did this to you". correct me if i'm wrong, but i'd say that the second one is a bit more offensive religiously speaking.

heh, seems there's nothing you can do about it. people are dumb. for some reason i am seemingly held to a standard of "having" to listen to just rock/punk because of the style of person i am, when i listen to dance music a lot of my friends shun me for it. it really makes no sense =\.

Another thing that drives me completely up the wall is people assuming that just because i am from the Caribbean i like reggae artists like Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder and all those other "pop" reggae artists. Those guys sing crap. Plain and Simple. If they want to hear some GOOD reggae, then they should listen to some Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Gregory Issacs and some of the other older artists. Or perhaps some Sizzla, Anthony B, Capleton and other newer artists. Now those guys sing reggae. None of this pop shit that some of the others r singing. I even carried some of their cd's for a friend of mine who listens to Sean Paul. She says she loves him and he is great. He is shit imo... Anyways, i played some Sizzla for her one time and asked her what did she think and she said that he was ok, but she heard that he sings a lot of christian reggae. Chrsitian reggae? anybody who knows Sizzla will know he doesn't sing christian reggae. He is one of the most controversial reggae artists out there now. Hell even later that day, she asked me if i knew a particular song and i told her no and she said that she didn't think that i would have because i don't listen to that "Sean Paul kind of music." Sean Paul has a "kind" of music? Since fucking when?? He is SHIT compared to others past and present. Not even the great legend Bob Marley has a kind of music named after him. Honestly, do people think sometimes before they speak???

most of the music i listen to is hard-trance, people just call it "techno" which is wrong, or "doof-doof" coz of the bass-line, whereas most of the time when the song is at its peak the bass is second to the leads…
but as for modern RnB… i believe its gone down the shitter completely… ever since the US banned "raves" every second person has been jumping on the RnB bandwagon… i was watching MTV yesterday to see some guy "jin" rapping with absolutely no talent at all (and no i'm not racist)… not to mention 50 cent, and all the other talent-less new-pop artists

I could write half the bullshit that is on the popular radio now; just one catchy line will sell you it seems. Plus the fact that some 'artists' don't even write their music. Wordless music is great for me. Rap backbeats, techno (computer game techno), and fast instrumental/classical. Lyrics (especially the nonsensical crap coming from rap/hip-hop) just get stuck in my head and piss me off. Can't concentrate. Others like Bob Marley aren't quite so bad, although I'd still like it better without lyrics.

I wont listen to any music that has profanity in it, I love rock and roll, but when I heard the Black Label bands live CD I took it back, Zakk Wylde uses the Mutha F*&a word over and over and he sounds like an idiot, he'd get his ass kicked around here for sure..
And the inner city rap music is absolute crap. Profanity and filth to make money off of ignorant people, and it disgusts me when I hear it right next to me. It is disruptive and inciteful, and fuels the irreverant youth and adults of our nation. As surely as there was Cain and Able, there is right and wrong, and good music and bad music, I choose not listen to it, but it was created to make money, and nothing more. I dont accept the analogy that it is poetry. It has evolved into the new form of rascism and exascerbates the growing tensions between people of color and the white community. When I hear rap music next to me on the street in my car, I roll the window up and attempt no to hear the profanity, but like grafitti, its out there, polluting our enviornment. Bill Cosby was right, nothing perpetuates the stereotype and the stupidity better than those that use music and the media to promote this crap.

tbh, most people have never even heard the music i listen to... if you've ever played dance dance revolution though, it's that music. and, i have been listening to it *long* before i started playing DDR (actually started playing DDR cuz of the music), so don't think i'm one of those guys who started listening to it because i am so obsessed with DDR. i do have my own dance pad, but i can't even dance in maniac yet; i think i'm just too fat or something.

eve6 is like alternative dude. they are a pretty sweet band saw em live like 4 years ago. Alternative is cool like dashboard confessional, jack johnson, tom petty... its some great music to sit back and relax on those hard days that you dont need a push from my screaming punk or hardcore music \m/

Falstaff Old Codger Join Date: Sep 2002 Location: USAFA Posts: 19,048 Rep Power: 207	I wont listen to any music that has profanity in it, I love rock and roll, but when I heard the Black Label bands live CD I took it back, Zakk Wylde uses the Mutha F*&a word over and over and he sounds like an idiot, he'd get his ass kicked around here for sure.. And the inner city rap music is absolute crap. Profanity and filth to make money off of ignorant people, and it disgusts me when I hear it right next to me. It is disruptive and inciteful, and fuels the irreverant youth and adults of our nation. As surely as there was Cain and Able, there is right and wrong, and good music and bad music, I choose not listen to it, but it was created to make money, and nothing more. I dont accept the analogy that it is poetry. It has evolved into the new form of rascism and exascerbates the growing tensions between people of color and the white community. When I hear rap music next to me on the street in my car, I roll the window up and attempt no to hear the profanity, but like grafitti, its out there, polluting our enviornment. Bill Cosby was right, nothing perpetuates the stereotype and the stupidity better than those that use music and the media to promote this crap. Rock as we know it is dead. The Blues lives on. What kids today call Punk is not Punk... Classical endures... Country has evolved but it is too popular Rap is dead....( its the same old crap over and over) Hip Hop is evolving..it just has to get better.... Pop....is well, pop..the flavor of the week.. Kamel DriverHeaven Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Posts: 44 Rep Power: 0	tbh, most people have never even heard the music i listen to... if you've ever played dance dance revolution though, it's that music. and, i have been listening to it long before i started playing DDR (actually started playing DDR cuz of the music), so don't think i'm one of those guys who started listening to it because i am so obsessed with DDR. i do have my own dance pad, but i can't even dance in maniac yet; i think i'm just too fat or something.

EXCEPT for the screaming punk/death metal crap but yes, I listen to EVERYTHING(to name a few) Big & Rich, Tim McGraw, Lonestar, Garth Brooks, etc(Country) Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Anthrax, Pantera, etc(Old Metal) Iced Earth, Norther, Thrice, Lollpop Lust Kill, Dope, etc(New Metal) Pink Floyd, Radiohead, etc (Chillout 'Head' Music) DMX, OutKast, Ying Yang Twins, Busta Rhymes, etc(Rap) Greenday, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit(Pop, of sorts) Yellowcard, Story of The Year, Pennywise etc(The 'punk' that gutterpunk hates ) DJ Tiesto, Oakenfold, PvD, DJ Icey, etc(Techno/Trance) Clint Mansell, Howard Shore, Edward Shearmur, Danny Elfman, etc(Orchestral) Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, The Beatles, etc(The Requirements of all music collections, lol) and lots else I don't exactly know how to classify, like Eve 6, The Cranberries, Skyfire, etc

I liked them before they were popular then the music went to crap. yellowcard sux live and too poppy formy sorts. eve6 is like alternative dude. they are a pretty sweet band saw em live like 4 years ago.
