Back, when I played original counterstrike I just used my original CDkey and that was is. They move to steam and I droped the game.

I quess I never buy HL2

...it is the same as FarCry protection. What I have into my DVD drive is my bussines and any game that force me to each time running it searching, inserting and waiting for any media - will be just cracked to do not do it. Period.
