I got my gf an ipod mini last year and I just recently bought a rio carbon pearl (5gb). After having experience with both I like the look better on the carbon. It also holds 1gb more, is smaller, and holds a way longer charge (20 hours and it's no joke!). Plus I like the software a lot better and how the device doubles as an external hard drive. It was also cheaper. I have some nice koss earclips to go with it.

The only thing I like MORE on the ipod mini is the wheel. It's a cool wheel. If you can get over not having the wheel, I definitely recommend the rio carbon. They come in 5gb or 6gb. Make sure you get a pearl though, the regular carbon comes with a shitty case.

Where did you hear this, because the apple website definately says that all of the minis use HDDs no flash.

The iPod Shuffle uses flash, but not the minis.

I read something about the drive after THG cracked a bunch of MP3 players open(or maybe it was anandtech?)

Anyway it was either THG or anandtech, and they cracked a bunch of MP3 players open to see how they tick and some of the 4gb minis have these Hitachi(I think? I'm really gunna have to find this) microdrives that happen to be flash based. It was pretty interesting.

Honestly it doesnt make any difference whether its flash or HDD.

I would have to say that the Ipod is better because It holds about 10,000 songs, and my old Iriver could only hold about 70.

what i think they meant is that those microdrives are the same size (or similiar) as compact flash cards, and that many devices that support CF also support microdrives

it's why alot of people used to buy the mini's, because it was cheaper than buying a 4gb microdrive
