Quote from [H]ardOCP
/------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Posted by Kyle 1:55 PM (CDT) On the gaming side, as E3 will kick off and be under way here in a day, Peter Wightman shows us over to the Unreal Tournament 2003 site. Looks to be some pretty nifty stuff, but if it has anything on DOOM]|[ I will be surprised. Peter gave me this quote from Game Developer, but I cannot get the site to come up at the moment where the quote is ripped from. Word from E3 is that the UT2003 demo will be released just after the conference ends May24 ... And it will include the Unreal Performance Test (UPT) that tests todays computers for tomorrows games! /-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First: I'm am an [H] and the following is not in any way meant to harm the [H]. I use this quote because it sparked this whole train of thought. It bothers me that people judge a game so quickly. Unreal Tournament looks to be more than an excellent game... I've seen the movies and i've seen the shots... it is beautiful. If it is anything like its predecessor... this game will be amazing. I would also like to point out that while not popular in the news community, Unreal is still a popular game... (at least among my friends and colleagues)... while the only *good* server for QIII is "Bob barkers showcase showdown". The point is that UT , IMHO, is a superior game to Q3 ... but was overwhelmed because it had inferior support from the modding community. Nothing happened with it. Given half the chance I'm sure UT2k3 will eclipse DoomIII and QIV. But for now I leave you with the classics... which did you prefer Q3... or UT?

I may be slightly biased as I've been a 1st team player for For F*ck Sake UT Clan for about 2 years now. And I'll also freely admit that I've hardly played that much Q3.
From a game players aspect when the games first appeared, Q3 was the clear winner. Larger community, better graphics, better support and more reliable. Today? Well, after the 436 patch for UT D3D stability finally appeared. Then, Dan Voguel wrote a decent OpenGL renderer which far surpased Tim Sweenies D3D renderer in speed, looks and stability. It also had the nice feature of being able to use the compressed textures on the 2nd CD which only S3 MeTaL owners could use. Now UT becomes the winner as the OpenGL renderer has been proven to work on more cards than the D3D one, it has better graphics thanks to the compressed textures and hasn't crashed on me since. As to better support? I can't really answer that because I don't normally play mod's Now, lets look at the gameplay. Q3 has always been a bit of a dead fish for me, with lifeless controls. Plus the guns were only so-so. UT on the other hand brought many innovations such as alternate firemodes and more importantly the "dodge" move. To date, its the only FPS I know that has a "dodge" and i find it very useful. UT also features the translocator, a very handy device to move around with -and frag with. Infact you can commonly traverse an entire map in a matter of seconds doing this. Now lets also look at the game types. With Q3 you get deathmatch, team deathmatch, and - erm - thats it. (I may be wrong here as I haven't really played Q3 that much) With UT you get DM, TDM, CTF, DOM and Assault. Couple that with arena and mod modes (such as InstaGib, Sniper Arena, Relics and FatBoy for example) then you get many varied rules and gametypes. And then iD charge you more for a decent CTF gamemode for Q3 - TeamArena. Sorry if I've rambeled on a bit. GO UNREAL

Yeah... Unreal kicks some major arse. I gotta say that in my opinion the graphics in UT are better than in Q3. The quality about the Q3 graphics that draws most players in is what can be called "Artsy". You know nice looking walls and all. I do however prefer the UT graphics myself because they are a lot more detailed.
And i do look forward to UT2k3 in which (as i have seen in the demo movies) the graphics will be both artsy ( moody) and detailed ..... yippeee!!!!!!!!! only four votes so far though... depressing.

Judged as games I feel that UT ruled Q3 hands down! Much more realistic gameplay action & movement, plus a compelling single-person mode. Q3 struck me as cartoony and arcadish, and I was bored to tears playing the single-player by the fourth fight.
If I judge them as game engines , I'd favor with Q3 all the way! I feel it's technically superior and gives more "oomfff" on lower-end systems due to it's highly configurable nature, while UT is a resource hound-from-hell that I use to gauge my CPU overclocking experiments. (It's pretty CPU dependant. )Q3 didn't start to shine for me until all the games based on it came out, but then I was totally addicted. I remember how damned good I thought STV:Elite Force looked and ran on my old Rage128 compared to UT and just felt it was a vastly superior engine. I'm hoping UT2K3 is a bit better, from what I've been hearing it's supposed to be a LOT easier on the system comparatively to UT.

You know... i've always gotten better fps in UT than in Q3... so i always thought lower end users would prefer UT. Ah well... at least people are voting now.

I voted for Quake3 just because I'm better at it and it runs better than UT on my system. UT is an awesome game, but when it drops down to 10 frames per second with 4 people on the screen (I know, I need to upgrade), I don't tend to enjoy it as much. It seems to take a lot more to slow me down with Quake3. Truth be told, though, I'd have to say Quake2 owns them both.

I voted for Unreal. I have to admit that I have probably played Quake 3 alot more than Unreal. I do however think that Unreal is a better game. I love the oversized household rooms they crack me up with their perspective. Also I am a huge fan of the sniper rifle in games that have one, especially hunting down another sniper. It kinda reminds me of Enemy at the Gates. You can get some great sniper duels going on in the midst of battle in those boards.

I voted for UT, but the original Unreal remains my favourite FPS ever (despite some dodgy level design in places).
UT is still great to fire up and play now and then. I still haven't completed yet though. :o I thought Quake 3 was crap. Looked nice, but just felt awful and "spongy". Bots were a bit naff and didn't have as many gameplay modes as UT. |

UT is so much better. Just reinstalled it yesterday, damn I love that game. Don't know why I stopped playing it.

Admittedly, I did play Quake 3 a bit more than UT, but UT is the best game of the two. I've not installed Q3 in a while though, but UT remains (with the compressed textures, the game looks lush)
The bots are far superior, and the mutators are superb. I have the 436 creative UT Patch (since i just got an Audigy) and on the whole, it must be said that this.. game.. rocks!! GT
