A suspicious package containing what authorities called a "biological agent" was delivered to Indonesia's embassy in Australia

Officials in Canberra closed the mission and linked the incident to popular outrage over an Australian woman's conviction in Bali on drug smuggling charges.

The Prime Minister, John Howard, who apologised to Indonesia for the incident, said the agent was a powder sent in an envelope addressed to the Indonesian ambassador, Imron Cotan.

"The advice I have is that the reference 'biological agent' does not mean it is benign," Howard told reporters.

If tests prove the powder is dangerous, Howard said, "it's an act of reckless indifference to human life and I apologize on behalf of the Australian people to the Indonesian embassy and to the Indonesian government."

Later, he said that the substance contained bacillus, but had no more details. Bacillus is a genus of bacteria most of which are benign, but which includes bacillus anthracis, which causes anthrax.
