. You pay quite alot for your VW Golf. where you from again ?See, here's my thing, my car uses up gas like a MoFo, but it has a small tank for the amount of fuel it consumes. therefore, i'm at the pump more often than i would like. Would the tank hold 15gal instead of 13gal, then i would pay more up front, but be at the pump less often. |

Scotland mate, 'gas' costs an arm and a leg here these days.
Before the latest big jump in prices I was filling my tank for about£45, so I can only suppose it's somewhere around the £55 mark these days = $100. Don't know about the rest of the country, but here the price of regular petrol has gone above that of diesel for the first time I can remember. |

it takes about 25-30 to fill up mine. I spend about 20-30 a week on gas : (. If I drive safely I could strech that out to 30 for 2 weeks

Yay, price here fell today, we're down to about $1.10 US per litre, instead $1.18/litre as it's been for the past week.

So.... could someone explain the recent increase in gas prices? Because I can't understand why it's happening and I can't understand how gas prices are decided.
Is it the sudden increase in the sales of SUVs that made gas more expensive? Is it Iraq? Was it summertime, with all the tourists that went around with cars?

i don't know who decides and/or how it's decided. all i know is that by the time i am at the pump, i am paying about 75 cents in tax alone. like said before in this thread (and other related threads), here in the US we don't have it as bad other people do, but we're all feeling the gas price pinch our pocketbooks

that's cool that u can use regular unleaded gas if need be in ur performance car. most performance cars MUST have it...strange thing is my friend has a 99(i think) firebird its only a v-6(and not a very fast one at that) and it will not run on lesser grade gasoline's

You need higher performance gas for higher compression ratios. Unless your running a turbo or supercharger with more then say 4psi and/or don't have your engine stroked you should never need high octane gas. Some cars however come with stroked engines (2000+ Toyota Celicas GT's for example. Same engine as the non GT, but stroked for more hp and higher compression ratio.)
Running low octane fuels will not imidiatly damage your vechile if your vechile does require high octane fuels either, You will hear a knocking sound (gas igniting before it is where it needs to be in the engine.) if that happens just switch back to high octane fuel. Also note, never run performance (high octane) fuel in a vechile that dosent need it. Not only does it cause your engine to run lean (BADDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!) it decrease horsepower/torque and waist your money. More info on octane (kind of intresting) can be found here. Odds are if you are not driving a top of the line engine package (Saleen Mustang, Shelby Mustang, High end Porsche, RX-7, Toyota Supra, or just about anything that has a turbo/super charger) you do not need to run high octane! 87 will be fine! .Now the car sits in the driveway. Nobody drives it. Paint is burning off from the sun, in the areas it has burned off, it is starting to rust over. It will start right up, if the battery is jumped. One of the major problems the car has right now is the fuel regulator. The car will shut off randomly because the computer will think that too much fuel is being fed to the engine. Other than that, and it being so dirty, the car is in perfectly working condition .
