The Price Of Gas

Nothing to do with Bloc Party.

What the fuck is going on with the price of petrol???

Just spent a boring sunday afternoon reading through some of the forums when I came across this post by CDB:

$7.12 USD /gal

No fucking wonder BP etc all posting record profits!

Time for the truckers to take to all the major ports in Britain again I say!

Wow, that's even more expensive then the Swedish prices, we pay ~11.90 Swedish/litre (~$6/gallon)

It's fucking ridiculous.
I'm not a car freak or anything, but I do happen to live in an area that that's remote enough that running a car is basically essential.

I was reading last week that there's a part of scotland where the cost of petrol just went up to over a pound a litre!
That's around $8.10 a gallon!
The fucking garage didn't even have enough space on the fucking sign for it.
The sign was advertising the petrol at 01.9p /L !!!

It would be funny if I didn't have to drive everywhere.

GAs companies have us by the balls because its not possible for many of us to boycott it because we depend on it for most things. They are almost as evil as the tabaco comapnies. Hybrid is probably the way to go now.

Hmm, by my calculation, 101.9p/L comes out to be about $6.86 per USgallon . . . .

1 gallon [US, liquid] = 3.7854118 liter
1 GBP = 1.77741 USD

1.019 x 3.7854118 = 3.8573346242 GBP/USgallon
3.8573346242 x 1.77741 = 6.856 USD/USgallon

Maybe you're not paying as much as you thought

Last fill-up I paid $2.60... I remember paying $1.00 one time, like 5 years ago
But it's not too bad when work pays generously for gas mileage

I remember that too. It happened just as i started driving. It would be so awesome if gas prices stayed the same from then now.

US gallon, yes.

I don't live in the US though.

It works out 4.54 / gallon where I live.

It all boils down to economics. Supply and demand is the basis of gas prices being so high. We all want/need it, but there isn't enough to supply us all. Although there are many other factors as well. Such as the U.S. being in Iraq. I honestly thought that when the U.S. had taken over Iraq, gas prices would drop; instead, the opposite happened (now that i've said this, this thread will probably end up in the political and religious forum sooner or later ).

All i know is that i have to deal with it and pay what they want because gasoline is something i need to get to where i need to go. If prices drop, then good, if prices go up, oh well.

Well I believe the UK is a net exporter of oil, so they don't have a supply problem to begin with. As I understand it, their government adds outrageous taxes to the price of fuel, making it so expensive.

So I guess we are lucky, our government is pretty great after all! (wait did I just say that? )

Yup.

Something like 70% goes to the government.

They still bitch about it too.

How do you two feel about the idea to change things to pay for actual road usage... per mile and according to time of day and location?

They say it will greatly reduce current road tax and the duty on fuel, and help reduce congestion?

Can't see how it would work.

You can spend 2 hours in the city at rush hour travelling a few miles, my fiancee travels over 100 miles to wok and back every day, which she does at rush hour, but on carefully selected quieter roads.

If there was a way of making it work fairly, they'd already be doing it.

Regular Unleaded is $2.34 here right now, and .49 cents of that is just tax alone. I love the whole suppy & demand BS. Here is the break down.

1. First off since India & China (up 300%) are using quite a bit more gas, how much are they paying now? Shouldn't the price be the highest where the demand is the highest?

2. If the cost of oil is going up because of demand, why are the oil companies having record breaking quarterly profits? You would think their profit margin would increase but also costs would increase too.

3. Gas is supposed to be higher in the US because of the lack of refineries. Now humor me. If they have only so many places to refine the then their should be a surplus of the oil they purchase. In which case would mean less demand on global supplies. Another part of this is it takes a certain amount of time to refine oil. Why is it when the price of oil changes cost per gallon on gas changes immediately? These companies inflate the price so they'll make money later on when they actually process this oil.

4. Why is it any little thing causes the prices to raise? If a CEO for this company gets gas because he ate at Taco Bell for lunch prises raise. Just this past week it went up because the King of Saudi Arabia died. So what? He hasn't really been in control of the country or the oil for the past 10 years! Normally gas peeks around July, and then it starts going back down. It hasn't yet, and is only going up. I also think some times they decrease prices just so they can raise them higher a few days later.

I've personally stopped driving where I don't need to go. I can afford the prices, but to me it's a matter of principle. I'm not going to give them any more money than I have to. Crap, my electric bill has went up quite a bit since all of this too. As a matter of fact I've heard other people's has as well. People just sulk, and go oh well what can you do? First off don't drive when you don't have to. Try to buy gas when it's cheaper, and not when they inflate the price. A few years ago I never really cared about the price of gas all that much. However, when I had to work in a City 70 miles one way for almost two years I really started to notice the bite it took out. I have better things to spend my money on. Very funny the price of the oil I purchase to do an oil change in my truck hasn't increased at all.

Here is a nice article about gas prices.

I only drive the places I need to go.

It still hurts.

Lots of people are making lots of money out of us filling up our cars with fuel.

We need to do something about it.

In scotland here there are fishing boats that are being subsidised by the government to stay home and not fish, because the cost of fuel is too high!

Nobody fucking pays me not to get in my car and take the kids to school because petrol costs so much!
What the fuck is going on?

After reading the opinion from other country's I will not use the US millitary effort to blame the rise of gas prices. We are lucky to be anywhere near 3$ a gallon. Especially in crap california. We will eventually get up to about 7$ a gallon, just consider yourself lucky for living in this country when it comes to gas.

I'm always amused when people in the US complain about gasoline prices, even though they're the lowest in the world.

Hmm, and computer parts cost less here too. What is your point? I wasn't just talking about the price of gas here. The reason gas is cheap as it is here is because the USA is one of the largest oil producers.
