Anyone Rome Total War fans?
Hey guys, I had a question for anyone who has played Rome Total War. Now, I've never played a strategy game before, and was thinking about picking this game up. I'm just not sure if it's the right game for a strategy game noob to start off with. What do you guys think?

Definately not...
Na joking but it's very different... Not a normal RTS to be honest (tis very unique). You might like it you might not. Try the demo first

Definetly try the demo. The game is very complicated and involved. I didn't care for it (those games are too hard to me anymore). I would say grab something like Age of Empires or maybe the new LOTR game, that actually looks good. Nice thing is, there are demos out for just about all the major RTS games, so get downloading and give them a shot.

Its not a bad game. The only part about it that is real time though is the battles, which unless you are horribly outmanned take very little strategy (or maybe I'm so good that I don't know that I stumbled across the winning strategy right off the bat).
The two that I have been playing lately, Age of Mythology Gold Edition and Star Wars: Empire at War, are both true Real Time Strategy games, where if you walk away without pausing the game and come back you're lucky to have anything left of your fleet or army. I was playing Rome up until a couple months ago, and I will probably dig it out again, but I want to check out the new Galactic Civol;izations as well. Any strategy game that is well made can be good for a strat n00b, so just pick one that look sinteresting and dive in!

It's certainly worth a try imo,And is quite different to a few that is around. You will certainly need to pay attention to the training levels and tips.
It's been a very long time since i last played a strategy game(but im no big fan) but this is one tough game for sure. But as it has already been mentioned try the demo first then you should find out. |

If you like the demo, look for a package with Rome Total War and the expansion Barbarian Invasion bundled. Since the campaign mode map runs at turn based pace (you make your moves, then the computer sides take turn) it's newcomer friendly on the stress aspect. It's a game that takes time to master but isn't overwhealmingly difficult if you have that time to spare.
If you are a history fan with some knowledge about the time period you might want to check out a modification for the game named Rome Total Realism. It's more historically accurate when it comes to factions and units. http://www.rometotalrealism.org/ |

Thanks for the tip about the RTW game and expansion bundle. After you mentioned it, I was able to find some info about it on the games site (sega.com/romegold), and I'm probably going to pick that up now. It's called Rome Total War: Gold Edition, and it seems like a great deal. So thanks a lot. Hopefully people are still playing the game online.

Great game, I loved it, I just wish they would redo Mediaeval Total War with the Rome engine, that would just rock.....

Total War: Medieval 2 is in the works. I dream of a remake of the original japanese Total War setting, but as long as they improve the AI for Medieval 2 I'll probably enjoy that too.

So, do you guys have any tips I should know about before I start playing the game? For instance, I was readng about how you can play alongside Caesar, Spartacus, and other characters. And I was wondering how much that affected the way you play the game. Like does aligning yourself with one character make you stronger than another.

A few main gameplay tips: The largest economical factor is sea trade, so build ports and try to catch some seaside provinces early on. If the senate gives you an objective, carry it out if it seems easy to do but ignore the order if it's far from your own plans. On the battlefield, always try attacking an enemy group from its side or rear. Keep your cavalry forces moving as they aren't so tough when locked in combat. Remember that terrain and unit morale means a lot in this game. |
