watch the proof. its 100% official people. xbox 360 within 4 months has been cracked.

What is this? A bit more info...
The hack is a modified firmware of the Xbox 360 DVD-ROM drive.
As you (should) know, all Xbox 360 executables (XEX files) are signed by Microsoft (with a private key only MS has). This means that if you try to change anything to the XEX file, the signature will be wrong and the file will not boot.
Now ... to protect from booting an exact 1:1 copy of a game from a DVD-R or other recordable media, microsoft gave each XEX file a 'mediaflag'. This mediaflag tells the Xbox 360 from which media (cd-r, dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, hdd, dvdxbox, dvdxbox360, ...) the XEX is allowed to boot. Changing this mediaflag in the XEX header is not an option as it'll break the signature of the file (see above), so ... what's done in this firmware hack is 'break' the detection of the disc.
Retail games usually get a mediaflag where they only allow 'dvdxbox360' (Xbox 360 discs). The modified firmware will trick the DVD drive into reporting a DVD-R (or other) as a DVDXBOX360 to the Xbox 360.

How can you do this?
Well, right now you can't. The firmware has not been released to the public because it would mostly be used for piracy and that's not what this team wants. But the research done by these guys is public as you can read their discussions of the last few months on the xboxhacker.net, so people with good assembly experience should be able to duplicate this hack.

Right now the Xbox 360 DVD firmware can't be flashed via PC, because there's no software to do this. Of course, drivers and flashing software for Xbox360 DVD drives could probably be written (and some people have been working on this), but so far this has not been done (atleast not publicly).
So, that means you'd have to open your Xbox 360, open your DVD drive and desolder the chip where the firmware is stored on.
Each Xbox 360 DVD drive has a unique key, if that key doesn't match what your console is expecting your DVD drive will not work.
So next you will need to read your current firmware chip with special hardware (flash programmer), to find your unique DVD 16 byte key (stored at 0x4F00). Then you'll have to insert this key in the modified firmware (or patch your original firmware) and program this modified firmware back on the firmware chip. Then put the firmware chip back in the drive, close DVD drive and Xbox 360 and I guess you're done.
As said above the hack would allow you to run MS-signed and unmodified XEX files only, so that also means the game must be of right region (as changing the regionflag in the XEX header would break the signature). Unsigned, homebrew executables would of course not work, again because signature check would fail.

No Virus it was to be expected beacause the format is DVD and much easier than Gamecube plus nobody really cares about Nintendo compared to M$. In my opinion, this was soooooo gonna happen!

Agreed. And Nintendo ran their disk player backwards didn't they?

Anyway, it sounds like the hack is hard to do. The video isn't 100% proof either. There could very well be another xbox connected to the back of the tv running a legit copy of the game.

it is true, the AKA *specilist* was the first one to crack the original xbox useing a firmware hack on the dvdrom drive and now the same persion cracks the X360, seems likely that this is a 100% crack, but like you said its kinda hard to implament the firmware without hardware modification, the source for the information for doing the hack and specs are 100% real and posted on some xbox sites for other teams to work on a method that would flash there firmwares to the drive....

i see within 1/2 months a 100% crack without hardware modification
becuse currently there is only a 100% crack when modified.

EDIT UPDATE:

anyone else noticed the Wafer *flashrom chip* on the dvddrive, i guess they removed the original firmware chip and used a flashable chip in its place* also proof 100% that this vid isnt fake.

also...keep in mind that MS will hunt this down like mad as they make money on the games and LOSE on the hardware, where in the original the hardware had a very very slim profit margin....they won't sit by and let the profit get pirated and take hits to allow peopl to steal stuff

I doubt a USB device would do the trick. It'd be a nice coup if this hack was as easy as replacing the firmware chip, that'd really emabarrass M$, somehow I don't see it being that easy though.

if it is a flash/EEPROM programming hack, it seems a solder on mod chip could bridge it and you could actually make it switchable across the 2 firmwares by having a double looped crcuit with a switch/bridge connecting the modded and unmodded chips

wow this is nuts i expected it to be much longer as well i have the media center extender with this transcoder i found on the internet so i can watch my xvid and other videos of the sort on it so maybe a similar method can be done for the media center stuff because its a huge pain to have to transcode you cant fast foward or anything so a USB MCE or something that works with the MCE extender would be nice to have.

but i agree give it time and we will most likely see a similar method done for the USB slots in the front!
