Help! BF1942 won't recognize video card

I installed winXP and installed 42.81's for my gf4ti4200.

Sof2 (openGL) works great in single and multiplayer. 3dmark runs fine. DXDIAG checks out.

I install BF1942 and when I launch the game it just gives an error -a critical stop (no description of course) and pops right back to desktop.
In BF1942 there is a little program called easy info where it tells you what the game recognizes about the computer. Under display, everything is gray'd out.

The game worked ok under win98se- Anyone know how to make that game recognize your video card>? It doesn't help if I update the game either.

Anybody with any experience at all with this game under XP out there have any idea?

Have you tried this?

Go into Battlefield 1942/mods/bf1942/settings
Use notepad to open the file VideoDefault.con and change the following line to 1.

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0
Worth a shot eh?

I'll try it, but I'm afraid my problem might be more than that. I looked at all those.con file settings and wondered if something was going on w/ the refresh rate fix.

The only thing is, when I run the little easy info program, it doesn't detect any video card at all. I'll try that though and see if it works.

I still can't figure out why the game won't detect my card, I am thinking there is a file somewhere in the game where I can "tell" it what kind of card I have if it won't detect it for some reason.

I was also thinking maybe it's a directx9 compatibility problem, but I was running the game on win98se w/ dx9 installed, so that can't be it. It also detects direct x, it just says it's not signed. (like any of my drivers are)

DUDE! YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! You are my new best friend!!!! IT WORKED!!! I am kinda new to XP so when I installed the refresh rate fix I didn't know it would cause some programs to not run (with their default video configs).

Ha, and the new 1.3 patch just came out too- I gurss I'll give this game another chance, hopefully it will run better on XP than it did on 98se. This is a cool game, it just had some major issues. Time to go do some testing.

Again, thanks allot- I hacked around in those .con files to try to solve this problem before, but I changed the resolution, and didn't notice that refresh rate line.

**PS- I guess that's why you got that nice little gold medal down there, well earned.

Well, that did get the game going for me, but now the damn thing runs in "slow motion"-- weird ****, I'm getting over 100 fps, but it's lke I'm in slowed down time or something- really screwed up- I'm gonna reinstall DX9, Nvidia drivers, And BF1942 too see if it will work. I dunno, I'm getting pretty fed up w/ XPpro- NOT a gamers OS- It absolutely sux for gaming. I bet it works great for networking and the like, but for games its a real pile of crap OS. If I can't get BF1942 running I'm gonna be forced to uninstall it and go back to win98----

edit--- Woe- my "swear word" got bleeped out? I guess I gotta go read the news posts, is thgere a ban on the S word here now???

ToshiroOC is on a distinguished road

Post asking about that in the feedback forum - some mod might have decided that your language was too extreme or something wierd - there isn't a filter on words like that as far as I can tell... especially since it didn't censor "crap"...

Hmmm, I think there is a filter because it was instant - I said s-h-i-t, I will do an experiment- I will spell it again and see if it is instant this time too- here it is: ''''''''''''****'''''''''''''''''

*edit- yup- new filter on board

Man, now when I chech dirextx diagnostic my spinning cube is going 300 miles an hour!! What the hell did I do? I reinstalled dx9 and my video card drivers and the same thing happens! I hope I don't need to reinstall my os for this to work right.

***edit**** I reset evrything in riva tuner (nvidia drivers) to their default value, including the refresh rate fix. Then the spinning boxes are normal. Does anyone out there know if this is due to the refresh rate fix? Man, how many problems does the damn refresh rate fix cause on an XP machine?? This is insane.

Sad

Hey there, sorry to hear things were not all as well as we thought
I'm afraid you're now in territory I'm not familiar with (XP, dx9, refreshratefix, rivatuner, etc.)
Sorry I won't be able to offer anything more, I just wanted to reply so you know I saw the news
Good luck
