Quake IV Modeller Interview
http://www.3d-station.com/interview/...16&version=ang
- Can you tell me more about your current job (Raven Software, Quake 4 project)? I’m a high res modeler/artist on the Quake 4 team with the focus on modeling characters/creatures. I also model anything else needed for the project (e.g. player weapons, map objects, etc.). And as a modeler and artist, I get the opportunity to add to the overall design of the characters that I work on. - You are a self driven person (as you say on your site), "Find what you love to do and never work a day in your life." That's why I have chosen the same job, but did you begin 3D with traditional sculpting or did you begin with CG directly ? I’ve been involved with art my entire life, from as long as I can remember. My parents can remember me drawing when I was 4 years old. I started sculpting mostly with wire and clay when I was in high school just for fun. The thought of modeling or sculpting for a living never crossed my mind back then. I knew that I would be an artist in some form, just didn’t know what exactly. It wasn’t until I started working as a Graphic Designer that I really started becoming interested in Computer Graphics. That interest sparked me to go back to school and study Computer Animation. I first touched 3D in October 2001, and honestly, I haven’t let go since. And as we speak, I’m taking figure drawing classes at UW – Madison with a couple of other artists from Raven. The further I get into 3D, the more I try and improve my traditional art skills. Your modeling skill are amazing, you seem to like to add details and details, it's really your pleasure ? In a production, can you take the time to detail as well ? (are you Flash ?) Usually in a production environment it's very rare to need a such detailed models, no ? Yes, I love adding a lot of detail to my models. I enjoy the challenge. In a production pipeline, there is usually be a poly count/limit to the geometry that you can use. In my case at work, our poly counts for the high res models are pretty high. The models I do at work are just as high – if not higher – than the models that I’ve done in my personal time. talented guy, read the full article at the link above. |
