Quake 4 troubles

I'm not sure if I should post this here or in the driver forum

Anyways, I recently picked up a gorgeous copy of quake 4, and pretty much the mess in trying to get it "kinda" running at like 1 or 2 frames a second got me to install the omegadrivers here on the forums, instead of flat out crashing like it did at first.

Well... since it works now... maybe I can get some help tweaking it so it works I'll keep trying several things.

Specs:
System is a "desktop replacement" type laptop, HP zv6000. Specs are as follows:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz processor
512 of PC2700 RAM
128MB ATI Xpress 200m video (dedicated memory) (actually runs similarly to the 300 series, even uses the same drivers according to HP unofficially)
8x Dual Layer DVD+/-RW drive
90 GB Hard Drive
Windows XP Professional sp2

For an idea of how it looks see this friendly picture:

Better than not working I guess, but... I bet this is easier than crashes to fix.

Nothing is overclocked in any way, but I'd like to get this at least working at a decent framerate (decent being anything over 10fps, I can work from there) Also turning off all the various settings inside quake does nothing, shadowing and everything else is disabled, even bump mapping, still not doing much good.
I'm betting somehow my settings are haywire, and I figure more people here use the same graphics card as I do and know about the drivers than other spots I've visited.

I want to actually play this game and see how it turns out, I hope it's worth it. Is it true that ALL the models, even for multiplayer, are actually male though? That's a bit weird...

There is a known problem with this

I have an HP zv6270us laptop.
KOTOR 1 &2 - about 1-2 frames per second, jagged images and no 'smoke' effects
Quake 4 - 1-2 frames per second, half of the graphics are 'blacked' out on the screen
... does this sound familiar?

I've done a lot of research on this problem over the past few months trying to get the likes of KOTOR, Quake, Adobe Premeire, or just about any other OpenGL app to run worth beans on this model. So far though, no luck.

What I have found so far is this. The ATI Radeon Xpress 200m IGP has a known issue with OpenGL titles such as KOTOR 1&2, Republic Commando, Quake 4, amonst others. Basically, what happens is if you can actually get the game to launch your performance is about 1-2 frames per second. This problem is isolated to the older versions of the video firmware. Newer laptops that run the 200m, like the zv8210us, have completely resolved this issue via a BIOS flash that fixes the video firmware.

Homebrew drivers such as Omega and DNA do not resolve this as it has been isolated to be a video firmware issue and not that of device driver. Also, Quake 4 really hates drivers that mix and match atiogl file versions. The Omega or DNA drivers will cause Quake 4 to crash.

I have opened a support ticket with HP regarding this matter but so far say that there are no "known issues" with the 200m and this model laptop. I urge you to file a ticket with HP and include any and all links to pages or forums that help to document this problem. HP will fix it if they know for a fact there is a problem. Hope this helps.

If it is, and more than likely, a problem coninciding with HP, than their customer support will more than liekly be the best way to go.

However, it shoould be known that the x200 model graphics card is by no means a card capable of running graphically intense games such as quake 4, or half life 2 for instance. It is strictly a budget card for the beginner gamer, or if you are looking to upgrade the graphics level on The Sims, or Roller Coaster tycoon to make a comparision.
