The forums over at AVSforums are running a story that suggests not using Sony component cables will void your PS3 warranty...
See the post in question here I guess thats one more reason not to buy one!

If any of you get Game Informer, check out Edition 166 (the current one). There's an interview with Gabe Newell and, among many other things, he states that Sony should cancel the production of PS3, apologize to the public and completely 'do over' from the ground up.
A little off topic, he also states that Microsoft has lost focus with Windows VISTA. With so many problems, he'd rather see them focusing on what already runs on hundreds of millions of PCs rather than on a few million proprietary clients. He'd rather use a MAC than VISTA at this stage. |

Game Informer has been pretty shitty from January back but Feb's issue (the most recent) was actually pretty damned good. I'm glad I got the EB/Gamestop Edge card with the subscription to Game Informer. |

although i always use "official" cables and controllers, this does suck.
for the record, nintendo have the same policy pretty much, not sure about the 360... |

The guy making the post is obviously not the smartest person.
I would not have let them off the phone until they explained to me how a cable could cause the hardware to malfunction. I would also ask them to prove that their cables are anything more than a generic cable with a sony logo on it. I would have also asked for their supervisor and pointed out that it is illegal to tell me they will void a warranty for using a 3rd party product unless they can prove the cable caused the failure. I would have also made sure to point out various sites where I can prove without a doubt that their hardware has problems. Last, I would have pointed out that printer manufacturers can't force you to buy their ink and a car dealer can't make you do all of your business there and void your warranty if you don't. Either way, I hope that this person just takes their PS3 back and gets a refund. Last edited by EcPercy; Jan 28, 2007 at 12:26 AM. |

right but at the end of the day, they can just say "so sue me?" and you'd have to either put up or shut up.
and remember that sony's lawyers are pretty freakin good at their job.

well the thing is, i know for fact, nintendo does void your warranty if you use 3rd party parts, as could a car dealer for that matter, its their warranty and if they put it in that you need to use what they say, then you have no choice. Nintendo also had measures for the game cube where they could tell if you put a 3rd party control or cord into your console (look it up, i cant be f*cked writing up a few paragraphs on how they did it)

A third party controller damaged my playstation one. It fried the controller ports so the system no longer could detect any controllers or key inputs.
Eventually, I took it apart (throwing the warranty right out the window in the process, obviously) and inserted the controller ports from another (broken) PSX I had lying around. Worked like a charm, good thing a Playstation's hardware is simply designed. |
