HL 2 (even EP1 and all Source games)

HI there- big issues with Hl2- now i know it has many many forums regarding this game- but i wanted to know if anyone on DH has actually noticed a stutter fix with old ati drivers? even with omega drivers?

i have beyond what hl2 requires - when i first ran the game, ran perfect, now- (no vista, just winxp) it hitches and stutters- very annoying (since hl is my favourite rtshooter ever created!)

i did contact steam/valve via customer care- they gave me the same garble- drivers up to date yadda yadda yaddaa blah blah ram cpu ..defrag etc- did it all! fresh formats! virus protection up the wazoo! and Hl2 ....still has the problems of stuttering- oh and believe me i ran through tweaking guides...i tried so many things..aside old drivers- just wanted to know if it has helped anyone (only gpu drivers) ?

i know its messed.."how can this issue exist with HL2 i dont ahve it!?" well people who get to say that are very blessed and lucky- cheers! basically i hope they have demo for ep2 or atleast messed aroudn with the source engine because its not fair that alot people cannot enjoy dark messiah even...sucks...i hate not being able to. but then it also brings about the " will i buy this?" question..ofcourse i wont- i dont want to waste money for something that will not work at all. (like stalker-ok i really mean- not work well)

game on- common VALVE FIX THIS!!! i wanna cs a bit blasted!

Oh man that was an issue so so long ago only with ATI cards. Some people claim using old drivers fixes issues but honestly the new drivers run the games a o k peachy keen jelly bean no problemo what so ever.

However short of rolling back to drivers that are literally YEARS old there is a few things you could do some of it you may have already done but do it again anyways making sure to follow the instructions listed here!

Exit and LOG OUT OF Steam.

Go delete your clientregistry.blob file (don't worry when you reconnect steam it will download a new one.) This file is found in your C:\Program Files\Steam directory.

Reload steam.

Attempt to play a game. If this does not fix your issue attempt the following.

Turn down your GRAPHICS and or AUDIO settings. Sometiems EAX screws up in HL2. So try to disable it first. If that fails start turning down the grahpics in game.

Otherwise you could always lower the directx levels but that is another thing ot try later

If that fails try the following:

Make sure your AUDIO and VIDEO drivers are up to date. This does NOT mean simply installing the new ones. You should uninstall all of the old ones first, reboot, and if windows prompts you to install them say no.

Than download drivercleaner from the site here (a link is on the main page pay the couple of bucks TRUST ME it is so worth it). Follow the instructions and run the application.

Reboot.

Install your AUDIO, and Video card drivers. If there was an update to your CHIPSET drivers update those also. Rebooting as necessary.

If it still doesn't work let us know.

well i deleted the blob file, i took crossfire mode off, i lowered the game to the crapiest looks and sound quality possible- and i even ran -dxlevel 70 with it...nothing. same fragging problem!!! - next thing is try older drivers- otherwise valve needs to fix that crap- i was gonna buy dark messiah when it came out..ya whatever- im putting my money towards guild wars nightfall...doesnt stutter- doesnt crash doesnt do anything! (forme anyways) - too bad though i really loved hl2.,..really! oh well the hell with it- hopefully ep2 will be fixed (highly doubt it) - and hpefully Hl3 will have nothing to do with that horrible engine. - they should not have used that load texture on the fly business- common valve!! - game on- thanks for the help though dude i appreciate it- ill post what happens with older drivers. but i wonder can i install VMWARE_ and run that machine with old drivers?

I'm running it on this system with ZERO stutters. I'm currently using the 7.3 Cats

A little more info on your system specs would help.

I have been reading about this stutter problem for years. I wonder what is the real cause of it. With a laptop with Intel CPU and ATI graphics card, with a large variety of drivers, never had a problem with source games. With a desktop with AMD cpu and ATI graphics card, never either. Something else is causing it, I wonder what.

One of the solutions that actully helped me was to setup the hl2 process priority.
Go to task manager ( ctrl-alt-del) , in the processes tab right click on hl2 and set up the priority to high (or if it's already on high set it up to normal).
