HL2 semi crashes and TF2 crashes

Hi,
got my steam orange box yesterday downloaded HL2, lost coast etc and obviously TF2.

I wanted to check out TF2 and started the game but I get a black screen (dont see any logos etc) and Windows (vista 32bit) pops up with "HL2.exe has crashed and windows is closing the application".... sight...

tried again... no luck...
tried with Lost Coast and the Valve Splash Screen appears and Windows pops up saying "HL2.exe the program seems to have stopped responding. Please click wait to see if the program starts responding again or close to close..." so I click wait and it moves on again with a "wait or close" popup again I wait and lord and behold hl2 starts and I am in the main menu...

what is going on?

I have the same problem with Vista x64 and this game. Sometimes it will lock up in game, and sound repeats/stutters.

I get to the loading screen, after that it crashes. I'm running XP 32-bit. It is beta after and I'm not too worried about it. Does anyone know when the pre-loading will begin for Episode 2?

Yea, after about 5 minutes of playing TF2, it locks up on XP, have to hard reboot cause when I go to open task manager, it gives me a runtime error and wont even open.
Runs in Vista Ultimate (32bit) fine though, so far at least.
