2 Dead 360s, Same way

My friend just messaged me over MSN, he's been agonised by the fact he can't play halo 3 because he got one of those advance orders that microsoft threatened banned live accounts with or something.

So he decided to play Gears of War instead, and funnily enough like halfway through the game his xbox got the dreaded 3 red lights of death.
Also funnily enough, my other mate's 360 died the exact same way, just died during GoW.

If you ask me, i blmae GoW, it's a conspiracy

Many 360 failures are due to overheating and games like Gears of War are just one of the most demanding ones, pushing the system a few extra degrees.

Been playing GoW... great game..... on a refurbished xbox360..... zero issues... work great....

damn it sucks.. luckily you can or should be able to get it easily replaced or fixed by microsoft at no cost.

The 360 is the worst console I have ever owned in terms of reliability. Not only are both 360's at home out for repairs but they have managed to scratch the hell out of our entire collection of games. The MS retards can deny this all they want but when I put in a brand new, just opened, game and I pull it out an hour later looking like someone had been playing street hockey with it, something is terribly wrong.
I hope we all get our consoles back soon, Halo 3 is right around the corner!

Cool (scuse the pun)
I doubt i'm gonna be doing that though if my mate gives me his console, i want to play it not destroy it lol.
Just a suggestion, but do you think there'll be a way to wire up a case fan or 2 inside?

you run your xbox360 vertically?

i've got 2 games here.. one of which hasn't been out of the xbox360 for nearly a week and ran daily... for hours on end.... and i just pulled it out and no a single scratch on it...

But i know someone that runs there's vertically and they complained that it takes all of 5 minutes and it's scatched pretty good.

have you had a chance to take a look at the elites...

i've heard "rumors" that they had made a few changes to the cooling hardware or whatnot on them...

it makes absolutely no difference whether you run it horizontally or vertically, the console can't not keep itself within thermally sufficent ranges. If you open it up you will see why. both CPU and GFX are not only passively cooled. the ram is stuck under a DVD player. the two rear exhaust fans are not enough to keep the console cool. This is why so many people, have modded them. I have seen three dead consoles inside and the cheap thermal paste has basically "burnt off" on both cores. I modded mine and put a 120mm over them and arctic silver on both. Whoever gave the "ok" on this design i would guess is working in burger king right now. The RMA's have cost microsoft a fortune, so i would think they have learned a good and rather expensive lesson from it all.

Nope, always laying on their side and always the same pattern of scratches. I'm sure its fairly rare but still it makes you wonder.. Microsoft does offer to replace Microsoft published games (not many) for $20 a pop but F'them; some of them are $20 brand new now. Both of our 360's were manufactured in 07/06 and they both sucked bad from day one.
Sony might have been late to the game but they were not stupid. In terms of reliability and heat management the PS3 is WAY a head of the game.

hmm..

er btw, i wasn't refering to vertical/horizontally being related to the heat issue.. just to scratching....

The Scratching is caused by a PCB on the laser that moves back and forth, it's a really bad design, I know this because I ripped open my old Xbox360 drive from my first console, the pcb is at 90 degree to the disc so when moved slightly the disc will come in contact with it, but depending on the quality control i'm sure in other drives it could be longer or positioned even higher than witness on my drive.

Just pick up the Nyko Cooler, basically sticks 3 fans on the back, yea yea fans drawing on fans isn't the best idea, but you aint gonna get anymore fans inside that thing, and if you have a Nyko and the xbox fans fail you still have your warranty that is now 3yr for any xbox360 console.

Anyone that has to send one back in use the online system https://service.xbox.com/servicehome.aspx

Much better, then you can track your repair as well.

the nyko cooler helps. i had one, going on a diode it lowered temps about 8-10c. however running it naked, drops temps 20c. and you dont have to contend with the whirlwind of noise either.

obviously removing the chassis isnt for everyone (or most sane people), but my 360 is modded to hell and back anyway so its not possible to rma it if it dies.

I've had 2 Premium consoles, first was a scratcher and died. 2nd was just a scratcher... called MS about it and they denied it was a problem and told me my only course of action was to write to management. Couldnt be bothered with that so found a great site: CD Fixer | Professional Repair of Scratched CD's DVD's Video Games Discs | Home who repair scratched discs for very cheap prices and have used that as necessary. (When they are done you wouldnt know there was ever a scratch on the DVD).

Got an Elite now, havent run it yet to find out if it scratches because i need to wait on a transfer kit coming from MS to get the saves/purchases off the old HD. I used the external cooler on the 2nd console and will contiune to use it on the Elite.

The 360 is a damn good console i'm not saying anything bad but from all the posts i've read here don't you think it sounds a bit unreliable?
My mate simon who's 360 died recently playing GoW says he's gonna get an elite and send the old 360 off for repair, then he might give it to me which is nice of him
He gave me his original xbox as well.

And with regards to heat, makes those watercooled 360 vids on youtube look very sensible :/

Of the original builds it's thought there was a 30% Failure rate, appauling by any standards, but MS is committed to support, and its warranty service is one of the best i've experienced, the new Falcon revision should be out now, which has a modified heatsink solution and improved ventilation, MS have written off over $1bil on failured units and industry reports say MS have actually scrapped units ready to go to retail instead of selling them. I'm not a fan boi by any means. But you have to admit MS had a problem and they've done everything they can to rectify it, I'm on my 3rd system, if this one breaks... well I'll be on my 4th system, the fact so many people turn round and say i'm on my 2nd system or my 3rd system shows that despite it's failings people still want to keep it, I personnally can't say the same for the PS3...

I suppose even if the 360 is unreilable, props to MS on attempting to fix the problem, even if they haven't released the new revision yet :/
