Oblivion ? Why does the NPCs Half Your Frame rate!

I mean i can max out oblivion and it runs perfectly at 60fps,

but the minute i encounter NPCs You know just the guards not the civilian life.
my frames rocket into the 30s

does this happen to anyone else ? NPCs seem to kill framerates in oblivion...

is there a fix.

it cant just be happning to me.

Are you using any mods? I see no reason that should happen with a Quad Core SLI system. Perhaps you need to reinstall Oblivion or tweak your oblivion.ini

Guards made my framerate drop as well when I encountered them. Especially at night when they had their torches out. I'm not sure what it was about them, maybe they take up a bunch of CPU cycles for their AI or something.

Have you tried turning down some of the shadow options? Specifically, "Self Shadows"? I know that this option, even with my new 8800GT, can cause the game to slow to a crawl, because unlike the title suggests this option is not just done on your character, but ALL characters.

What exact settings are you using? I just fast traveled from Anvil -- Market Square in Imperial City -- Cheyindahl. The only time I saw anything slower than 50 FPS was at night time in Cheyindahl. Most of the time I'm hitting the mid 70s to low 80s.

I do have a few mods installed and, of course, have Knights of the Nine, Shivering Isles, and the latest patch.

Is there any particular city/landscape where you have this happen? Any particular time of day?

Have you tried tweaking the Oblivion.ini file?
