Sad Some help please

A few of my games (DOOM3, Serious Sam 1 & 2, Madden 2K5 & Hulk would keep crashing to the desktop a few minutes into the game. And I can't even get Return To Castle Wolfenstien to install. When these crashes would happen, I receive 2 errors:
1 ~ message box when game crashes:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program C:\ <game>
Abnormal Program Termination

2 ~ once desktop shows up:
Display Driver Stopped Responding & Has Recovered
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding & has successfully recovered

I did get some help from BFG Support, which meant for me to uninstall my GPU driver, reboot into Safe Mode (when I booted into safe-mode, a list of items scrolled past, but paused at CRCDISK.SYS for a moment, strange) & preform a "driver scrub", w/Driver Sweeper then reboot & install the NVIDIA v169.25 driver.

It helped in getting DOOM3 running w/o crashing, Hulk plays OK for a few minutes then pauses (video) & stutters (sound) once in a while, but resumes after 10 or so seconds w/o crashing to the desktop. Serious Sam 1 & 2 still crash to the desktop soon after they start, I can't try Madden 2K5 right now & RTCW still will not install (though I think this is due to the OS).

I also turned off Norton Antivirus & Windows Defender. After installing the new driver, there are 3 new items in msconfig; does anyone happen to know if I really need these running:
NVIDIA Compatible Windows Vista Display driver, Version 169.25
NVIDIA Media Center Library
NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 169.25

I may need to also DL SP1, but since I am using dial-up, I'm looking at other was to get SP1. I tried calling MS, but they don't have a disk to send out right now. So now I need to get SP1 somehow to see if that fixes my probs.

Any ideas on getting these games running correctly?

Hi there and welcome to DriverHeaven!

Have you tried to run chkdsk c: /F (it wont run straight a way but when the Visa boots up it will run then)
to make sure that there isn't any damage on the filesystem. And then have you tried to run the games in compatibility mode?
It's highly recommended that you keep windows updated.
