GTA: Vice City - Slow loading Textures

(Not overclocking anything)

Anyone else having these problems?? It really sucks cause I'll be racing along on my speed bike and see an open bridge, and crash into the invisible barrier, which then forms into a massive road block. I have to stop sometimes to allow the textures to "catch-up" it seems.

Anyway, this is getting really annoying.

help?

I have a word for that kind of stuff, "slowding"

I've read the turning on the 'frame limiter' will help with some of those problems.

I don't have the game yet, so I can't say that it work work for sure though.

What specs do you have? If you are willing to overclock it will probably get better.

I don't have any problems with my current set up.

system specs

athlon xp2100 @ 1735ghz stock
512mb pc2700 @ 166mhz stock
ASUS A7Vxxx...somethin
Radeon 9700pro 325/620 stock

That's probably the most important info. I run all my other games great. I do have framelimiter off. Any other suggestions?

Yeah dude, Vice City needs an update and they need to make it NOW!! A lot of people are having problems with the frame rates, nvidia drivers, and running 5.1 sound. Vice City is fuxed.

my draw distance is maxed out, but seems to be -1, lol.

my poor radeon 9700pro must be too slow to keep up with this game. I guess I'll get a GFX

Yeh I had that problem too (Using Windows XP), until I set 'Compatibility' to 'Windows 98/Me'
No more slowloading textures whatsoever.

Did ya..

delete the "C:\My Documents\GTA Vice City User Files\gta_vc.set" file? (That's 98se speak, it's under wherever "My Documents" is on XP) GTA3 used to have real troubles crop up on almost any driver change...deleting that file fixxed it all up. (Although you'll have to re-enter your video, audio, & control settings in-game....sorry. )

Buddy, I think EVERYONE has problems with this. I don't know of people that don't have the problems. I mean out of my friends.

You NEED to ENABLE the frame limiter.

If you don't the renderer will use up all system resources to render 100+ fps and there's nothing left for the streaming system that loads the city in the background.
I had the same problem, driving into invisible walls or having 1m² pixels on walls, but as soon as I enabled the frame limiter the city was always completely loaded.

The bad thing is that this limits your fps to 30(!) which leads to very noticable stuttering. I don't think there is a way to raise this to 50 (would also work in my case) since the INI is encrypted/HEX/whatever, but maybe a patch will raise the limit a bit.

Another solution I could think of is playing in 60 or 75Hz and forcing V-Sync; 60 or 75fps should in most cases leave enough resources free to load the city correctly.

Easy-peasy.

Credit jjjayb with this fix and make sure to thank him for being the only person here bright enough (myself included in the idiot list on this one ) to read the readme file and find the fix.

Changing hardware / re-initialization:
Changing either your video card or soundcard may mean that you get Grand Theft Auto:
Vice City into an "invalid" settings state for the particular hardware. If you change
hardware, to prevent having to un-install and re-install Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,
perform the following:-
Video card:-
- delete from the "Grand Theft Auto Vice City/models" directory the files
"TXD.DIR" and "TXD.IMG" (if they exist)
- delete from the "Grand Theft Auto Vice City/data" directory the file
"CAPS.DAT"
- delete from the "Documents and Settings/Current logged-in User/
My Documents/GTA Vice City User Files" directory the "GTA_VC.SET" file.
If it fixes what's ailing ya, please post up.

Should I do this if I installed different drivers? Cause right now I'm running 42.92 drivers... and I cant run 43.xx or the new 44.xx FX Detonator's because after 5 min of gameplay i see all thes f***ed up textures and everything screws up and i have to exit the game.

Anybody have any idea what the f*** this is ?

Yes.

Do it WHENEVER you change drivers!

Shall I try again to install the new Detonator FX Drivers and do this ?
In the README it says:
Video Drivers:
We recommend using the latest available Video drivers for your video card. Where
available use the video chipset manufacturers "Reference" drivers in preference to
video card manufacturer customized drivers or Microsoft WHQL certified drivers.

This means for nVidia based cards Detonator 4 series drivers, and for ATI based cards
Catalyst 3 series drivers.

Does this mean I should install the Asus drivers that came with my FX5200, instead of the NVIDIA ones?
