Securom Context Menu Handler Crashes Windows Explorer Shell

SecurRom was installed when I installed CNC3 Kane's Wrath. I updated the game for playing online with the multi-player patch 1.1. Ever since after exiting the game the windows explorer shell crashes. Right clicking on the desktop, clicking on another icon, deleting a file, or moving files via windows explorer (not internet explorer).

I googled around and it has been stated that a badly coded context menu handler would be the cause. I downloaded Glary Utilities and disabled all the non-microsoft handlers.

The problem stopped. To find which one was causing the problem and enabled them one at a time. The poorly coded context menu handler that causes the error is SecuRoms. File: windows\system32\CmdlineExt.dll

EA issued a fix by replacing a game file. This does not resolve the issue with the Securom system file. SecuRom needs to step up and be responsible and fix the problem with the context menu handler instead of hiding it.

System Specs

Good find and the report can be helpful to others. We always have to keep an eye on Securom.

Another utility for managing things like Explorer extentions is AutoRuns

Oh, I am still at it with SecuRom. These guys are real dense. They sent me back an email describing how to run them a report. I looked where they asked and no such options exist in the context menus of the game. I replied back stating that there are no such options available.

This is where I get really miffed with them. They send me a link to a repair tool to run. So I run it and do the repair and reboot. My system starts crashing all over again. The stupid tool re-enabled the context menu handler again.

I can't help but think about all those poor kids who installed this game and have no clue whats crashing their systems.

Stay away from Command and Conquer Kane's Wrath Expansion Pack!

Thanks for heads up! Had the same problem! Damn it, what are these company's good for!? Why they introduce a context menu handler for a copy protection mechanism!? Replay of your email from them proves that they have no clue of their own SW!
Glary Utilities worked for me best disabling CmdlineExt.

Thank you

I startd to have this issue too, soon after Windows SP3 was installed. Also I noticed my DLL was 107K. I was on another forum and it said it should be 96K and dated from 2005 and another said it should be 108K. Since mine was dated 2007, it could be a versioning issue conflict, which SP3 brings to light. Or maybe a Virus, but AVG and Windows Live OneCare didn't see it as such. Also I read about CmdLineExt03.dll whcih has the same description and was on my PC, but not being loaded by Explorer. Heard some games will not run if you remove it. Buy Explorer doesn't work with it anymore.

I agree about not needing to reinstall. My XP box has been running on the original install since 2003.

For those out there who may not know how to disable shell extensions, (like I was a couple of hours ago), I found a very usefull site that explains how here: Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

Also if you are familir with SysInternals, I read that can do the job too.

Well now I can delete, move and open files again using Explorer. For now. Thanks!
