Midway Releases "Area 51" for Free

I noticed in my RSS from Gamershell that Midway has decided to release Area 51 for free. It's a pretty hefty download, though: 1.93 GB, so, if you do decide to check it out, make sure you have a good download manager.

It does include Multiplayer as well as Campaign [Single Player].

i can't play it . i went to fire up the game after i installed it last night and all that happens is that the screen flickers to adjust for to the default game resolution of 800x600, and then it kicks me back to the desktop. The other free download game, The Suffering, does the same thing .

sucks that i cant download it. my My docs folder isnt being found in its default location (no kidding, i moved it to another drive) so it wont install the downloader for the games.

wait... this is on gamershell now? i tried to get it from some other site last night, thought it was the same link. seeing as its on gamershell, ill give this a download tonight.

I believe the actual date of the game was 2005. There's a 1.2 Patch also available which I strongly advise that you download and install. It's my own practice to install the latest patch for any game prior to firing it up for the first time.

I'm on Vista 32-bit and haven't had any issues with the game's performance.

However, being deaf, the absence of sub-titles makes this type of game less appealing. But, there's plenty of action and the ability to check Objectives as well as the little 'hovering icon' over the objective helps.

It's definitely nowhere near the best FPS you can get, but, being it's free how can anyone complain, right?

If I remember correctly, you are a member of a military response team that is asked to go to Area 51 where there has been an incident. There you find that the shit has hit the fan. After a while in the game you get infected/mutated and you can at will change form from a soldier to a mutant/alien. You then have to fight both aliens and humans. That's as far as I have gone into the game for a variety of reasons, not related to the quality of the game that I found satisfactory.

I think I will download this version because I have no idea where the original disc is.

give it permissions? Permissions for what? It should just play right out of the box and not give me any issues. Perhaps though, i just need to install the 1.2 patch because i know i didn't. gotta find it first though.

The game comes with Online gaming included as part of the package. So, it may be the online part that requires the Firewall permission. All I really know for sure at this point is that I did have to give it permission in my firewall prior to it being able to start up properly.


And, BlueMak: I've made it that far into the game now, too. I can change between mutant and human and, YES, the battle gets hot and heavy at this point. Between meleeing the mutants and switching to shoot the humans, it's what gave me my nickname: Dyre Staits.

DJ: After you extend the bridge to the mothership, you have to go back down through the facility to get to it. There's a huge room with more spawns being cast, a force field, and a mounted gun.

Any tips on getting through this part?

EDIT: NM. I finished the game a few moments ago. But, that area was a good challenge.
