Far Cry 2

Anyone played it yet? The game looks amazing, and sounds like an interesting addition to the genre. I ordered it through Steam so it should be unlooked when I get home. Doing so even saved me $10 (after discount and taxes and such).

Post anything pertaining to the game in this thread. I'd like to hear what you all have to say about it. Include your experiences with system performance if possible.

Along those lines: Maybe I've not purchased a third party game on Steam yet, but I was surprised Steam didn't have it available first thing this morning. It begins downloading around 3:00 this afternoon I think. Good news is, you can still "pre order" it today, saving you $5. Hopefully it will be ready for play later on this evening.

The reviews seem to be a mixed bag. Some say it's the best ever, some say it's fun but flawed. Either way, all seem to think it's worth the loot and there seems to be plenty there to enjoy.

Re: Far Cry 2

May I recommend this format for posting benchmarks using the Far Cry 2 Benchmark tool (included in the game)? All you have to do is paste the results.

This is my In game settings imported into the benchmark.

Settings: Demo(Ranch Small), 1280x960 (85Hz), D3D9, Fixed Time Step(No), Disable Artificial Intelligence(No), Full Screen, Anti-Aliasing(None), VSync(No), Overall Quality(Custom), Vegetation(High), Shading(High), Terrain(High), Geometry(Medium), Post FX(High), Texture(Medium), Shadow(High), Ambient(High), Hdr(Yes), Bloom(Yes), Fire(High), Physics(Medium), RealTrees(High)

  • Average Framerate: 29.79
  • Max. Framerate: 43.78
  • Min. Framerate: 20.56

Running the new 180.42 drivers. Game wouldn't run on my C-media sound card (only game this has ever happened with) but it does run with a few sound glitches with my realtek onboard sound.

I played for about 30 minutes and it was pretty smooth once I tweaked the settings; the combat seems to be more enjoyable than Crysis and I like the weapons. I'll post more in a couple days when I've gotten further into it.

EEK! Re: Far Cry 2

My local games shop called me today that Far Cry 2 had arrived , I picked it up immediately and installed it right away
I was amazed by the huge world and that the main character has malaria :O.
As with the graphics... well, my 8600GT didn't really like it ^^.

Re: Far Cry 2

Gamestop had it at noon today picked it up got the special order disk that has the extra missions added, loaded fine, all setting's on max switched to dx 10 as it defaulted to 9 and started the game, plays like a dream, graphics look great, explosions look Beautiful, fire oh man it goes with the wind so dont start a fire and let it blow back on ya.
some of the game seems tedious but the enviroment is waykool finaly a game where you can walk/climb up hills to get to the next area not just go around them, hell you can damn near drive all over the place.

Been playing for about an hour or so. I like it, though it takes some getting used to. The environment is second to none, and the game runs great on my machine. Should get a better feel some time tomorrow, when I get to play some more.

Re: Far Cry 2

I got the game couple hours ago and I love it. Only thing what bothers me is the laggy mouse control. Not sure if it's about graphical settings(too high settings?) but I'm getting a decent framerate.

Highly recommended after couple hours of playing!

I restarted my game and found that I was put in a different location, with different weapons and friends...very cool...makes replay value very high!

I'm still early on in the game (2nd mission) and was wondering if I had to do every mission that the guy radios me to do...I thought the game was open ended in that you could go and do anything you choose...but it seems like the missions the guy gives me are mandatory...or is that only in the early tutorial part of the game?

DX10, 1600 x 1200, all graphical settings at their highest levels (Ultra or Very High), AA= 4X, Vsync= On

I had the same problem until I disabled Vertical Sync, now I don't notice it.

Re: Far Cry 2

Played quite a bit last night. I really like the game but these are my gripes:

-The story is so-so. I find it difficult to really understand what is going on and where to go next to further the story. This might just be the case with open-world games (STALKER), but GTA never had this problem.
-The enemy can take quite a few shots, too many really, before they die. That said, combat in this game is extremely fun. Much better than most games I've played lately.
-The milaria thing is plain stupid. I honestly don't know what they were thinking with this one. It seems they could have figured something else out to move the story ahead than this. That said, it's not a real burden (so far) just something that pops up every once in a while as an annoyance.

So far, thats it. The game is a real riot. Combat is very engaging and just plain fun. The environment is the best I've seen yet. Highly advised as a purchase for those sitting on the fence. Just don't expect to be blown away by the story elements, Bioshock this is not.

If Blockbuster have this cheap for PC (£20 ish), then I will buy it, a decent little game from most accounts.

just got it last night. only put about 2 hours into it (had a slight problem with saving the game.... it tried saving to a directory that doesnt exist. sucks i had to make a separate partition to get it to save, but, whatever.)

so far it seems like a promising game, and it runs very well. plus they started me out with a flame thrower.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The fire is an interesting dynamic. It allows you to approach things in different ways. Plus, it looks nice.

Its one of those games, for me, that is hard to quit playing. Just traveling around and checking stuff out is a ton of fun. Unlocking weapons and equipment breaths a bit of life into it too.

i guess what gets me is that every single person you come across is an enemy, and they start shooting as soon as they see you.

it would be nice to have friendly areas, or at the very least, neutral areas. theres something that gets very old about haivng to fight you way through every check point, guard house, and every oncoming car.

I agree. I've played for about 2 hours so far, and it's just so damn interesting.

We'll see if it's worth it this weekend when I really get my hands dirty.

So what is it with the malaria that people mention? Is it true that while the world is large/huge and open, you aren't actualy allowed to go anywhere you want since you die from malaria if you go too far away from the main path?

On this particular subject, I rarely ever enter the doors at Best Buy anymore due to this very consistent practice on their part. I've lost track of the times I made a trip to the store based on an AD in the local paper...arrived as the doors opened for the day for the very day the AD was dated....and they did NOT have the ADvertised product. Companies like this just don't get my hard-earned cash when I can get the same product elsewhere within any reasonable comparable price.

I've not run into this and I've been all over the map. Maliria just sort of crops up every once in a while as an annoyance during a fight. I don't really know what it's purpose is, but so far its not required me to stick to the main quests.

Re: Far Cry 2

I think what he means is how the world is 'open'. When traveling outside of the mapped area, I'm assuming, as it hasn't happened to me yet, you probably start getting malaria problems that make you return.

Kind of like how in Battlefield games, you would get "shot" for going outside out the map's boundaries.
