Re: Fallout 3
I had a conversation with a cousin of mine who has played the game. He said he is very dissapointed with it, that it doesn't feel like 1 or 2. That it feels more like a well made mod for Oblivion than a seperate game.
I can't comment on that since I am still waiting for the game to arrive, but I hope he is wrong.

Re: Fallout 3
Got my copy coming in the post in the next few days, can't wait to play it. I loved oblivion, thought it one the best games I ever played, I hope this game lives up to my expectations.
Really like the music from this game, just like Bioshock in this respect, I just love 40's 50's sounds. So excited! |

Could it be an issue with the X2 rather than sound card related? Such as it not liking Crossfire mode, driver related, or just not liking the card at all? Edit: Well, here's something to look into. This game has the same issue with ffdshow that Oblivion has (among other games), so if you have any codec packs installed you can try uninstalling ffdshow via add/remove programs, or run the ffdshow "Audio Decoder Configuration" to remove ffdshow from interacting with Fallout 3. There's 2 ways to do this. The first is based on if you are using an old version of ffdshow, and you need to run the following procedure: (edited from the original Oblivion fix from Bethesdas site)

One thing is it is as linear as oblivion. Ransacking a grocery store is a little different then diving into a sadist lair (elementary school) with limbless torture victims pinned to the wall. Trust me though, this game is like oblivion in the good ways, not the bad ways. The dialogue is top notch (though they reuse the voice actors from Oblivion). And each character is unique, from the gunslinging sheriff to the Whore for hire, to the ghouls, and to the pissed off Irishman, to the wandering traders, and the complete nut bags. This game has the diversity oblivion never had. Also nuking a city within the first few hrs of play is always fun. |

I agree, the NPCs are great, not as in Oblivion, where they felt generic.

Is it true that the enemies LEVEL UP with you the same way as in Oblivion? That was the main reason I stopped playing Oblivion.

Re: Fallout 3
Just noticed this SecuROM
It appears Fallout 3 has SecuROM for those that are interested. It doesn't appear to require any activation however, unless it does it silently. I think it only pertains to CD emulation detection. Anyway, I installed the game last evening and just barely made it out of the Vault. The game is beautiful, and runs at near max settings on my PC. I love the land and it's nice to see there aren't any draw distance issues. There are many comparisons to Oblivion, but that certainly isnt a bad thing. It's more that the game feels like Oblivion in a lot of ways and the story telling is equal or higher quality. Problem is, I don't really know where to go. I guess I'll figure it out tonight when I get some time to check it out. Not a bad game so far.

Re: Fallout 3
Yeah it has securom but a version that doesn't require online activation and/or limited amount of installs. I can live with that.
I am glad to hear there is no level up of enemy as in Oblivion, I hate when that happens. It reminds me of the banding of cars in certain racers where the AI cars will slow down or achieve amazing speeds just so they remain close to you....hate it. I just received an email that the game has been sent, I will probably (if all goes well) have it some time tomorrow. I am excited I guess I have this weekend all for this game.

Re: Fallout 3
This is false, "town guards" and other npcs are not super buff to start either. If you catch someone taking z's and you sneak up and shoot them in the head it most likely will kill them in one or 2 shots.

Re: Fallout 3
good game so far, but it does feel allot like oblivion. And yeh i got pwnt by that super mutant in the supermart as well >.<
Anyway, the melee combat is better than that of oblivion, enemies actually dodge timingly and makes playing melee more enjoyable. |

Re: Fallout 3
The Survivan edition only has the clock in addition to the rest of the Collectors edition (which I have), right? It looks good and cool idea for a clock, but not £100+ good.
Yes Amazon.co.uk Less than 24 hours after the first email that it is on its way. So far...very interesting. I had about 4 crashes that I had to hard reboot. I followed the disabling of the decoding as advised and it looks better but will know for certain after a few more plays. You can feel the routs to Oblivion, no question about it. I am a couple of hours in the game, left the Vault and exploring the metropolis known as Megaton. The game feels like a Fallout game to me. I don't know what to make of the battle system yet. I am not sure how I feel about it, have to play more. At least it is not bad. The graphics are good in terms of design, but at points they feel a bit...Oblivionesque. The game feels huge, just the life in the Vault was impressive on itself. This is definitely Fallout, but, is it any good as a game? Stay tuned

Re: Fallout 3
I'm loving it - the VATS is a great idea and I love the slo-mo cinematics, only thing I've noticed is that at close range you're better just to keep pumping the trigger - as there is no AP restriction if you're not using VATS...I think I'll restart when I get my actual copy now that I know how the game mechanics work.
I've had a couple of crashes to desktop (especially when closing the game) but I'm hoping that installing a 'legit' version will solve that.

I only played brotherhood of steel so I dunno much about the game setting. I do know this is a damn good game and you would be missing out not to buy it. Especially if you know all the back story. Edit: The only crash I had was when I hit F1 and if I tried to exit out of the game instead of exit to the main menu then exit out. |

Re: Fallout 3
To add to my earlier post HERE, rather than just edit it I figured I'd update it in a new post too.
For the ffdshow fix you should add both fallout3.exe and falloutlauncher.exe to the "Don't use ffdshow in:" section. Adding both of those has helped (at least with me) to overcome some bad lag issues, as well as audio skipping problems. BTW, for myself I've had the crashes when exiting the game, and I've seen a lot of posts from people and complaints from friends that are having random crashes during the game. All of them seem to have this problem after they leave the Vault. The above fix helped out a few people, as well as logging out of Games for Windows Live when playing the game, and not running with anti-aliasing turned on, but it's a mystery as to what's causing it. |

Re: Fallout 3
Yes, I de-ffded both files from the beginning, just to make sure. I am running full AA and AF. So far it feels that the crashes mainly happen when I either try to quit the game or after a while I alt-tab back in the game.
Apart from that the game is good. I had two memorable things to mention, but they contain spoilers, so you might not want to read after this sentence. The one was with the guy offering me to blow up Megaton. I informed the sheriff and we went together to the bar where he was. After a short interesting conversation, Burke quickly took a silenced pistol out and hit the sheriff from behind, killing him. I wasn't expecting it and didn't manage to save his life, but only one sec later Burke was lying dead after 2-3 headshots from me (real time). Unfortunately I didn't think of using the VATS or the sheriff might have survived this. I don't cheat or "cheat" though, so I let it go and did not reload. Intense moment. The second one was when I was trying to find the store that sells weapons in Megaton. I found the Armoury and for some reason I made the connection that that was the place. I opened it and found myself in a room, under fire by a security robot. I was low on bullets, but with the help of some stimpaks and my trusty old baseball bat, I managed to destroy the robot. Lots of good weapons, though in need of repairs, but again, not much ammo. About 2 min later I found the real store lol.

I don't know about the US version, but the UK version only has english, unless I skipped on an option somewhere and I don't remember. If you would only be satisfied with a birds eye view of Fallout and turn based battles, then this might not be for you. If you are willing to accept the 3D first person view of the game and the real time, even pausible, battles and look at the game, I believe you will find a good sequel to Fallout 2. Everything feels Fallout, from the graphics design, to the world in general. The weapons, the quests and how you handle things and how the world reacts. So far the game feels to me like Fallout 2, only in first person view. My favourite RPGs were/are turn based (basicaly all Black Isle-ish) productions lol), but I am willing to accept a game on how good it is for what it is, and so far, Fallout 3 is one heck of a good game.

Great game, but I'm getting the crash on exit bug that I used to get a lot in Oblivian.
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to avoid quitting the game as much as possible
