yes, but I would still rather be able to use 8.12 It gives a nice boost of frames per second to several games...
I don't know why it causes this problem with Fallout 3 and Command and Conquer Renegade. I only tried one more game, Farcry 2, but it ran fine. So....

I'm at lvl 16 already but the game has crashed a few times with the picking up of 5.56 ammo and alt-tabbing. My core 2 duo 1.86ghz on 4gb ddr2-667 and a xfx 9500 gt 512mb ddr3 can't seem to run the game smoothly and the settings aren't even high...no anti-aliasing on and no anisotropic filtering..although i'm running it at 1920x1080 widescreen...wondering if that's a factor?

pretty much haven't been doing the main quest...kinda veered off to do other side-quests but now back on track searching for him in Project P______

it's quite simply one of the best games i've played. the world is massive ala Oblivion (if you have played it) and the gameplay is superb. there is alot to do and even though i haven't finished the game yet, i think there is alot of replay value throughout.

btw i don't need a reply on whether my system is up to handling the game but for those interested a 9500 GT is barely sufficient to run the game. a 9800 gtx is recommended but budget gamers should have a reasonable time with a 9600 gt / 9800 gt - coupled with a core 2 duo @ 2.6 ghz or above.

Fallout looks like a great game. I'm thinking of saving up and purchasing an ATI Radeon HD4670. Would that be sufficient (or at least barely sufficient) to play Fallout? I'd love to play it if I could get a new rig together.

The 4670, though I don't know it, should be enough to play the game.

For me Fallout 3 is the game of the year, but, I am not impressed with the graphics, the same way I wasn't with Oblivion. They look good, at times great while others not so great, near you, but the further you look far away the more crap they look.
Thankfuly gameplay is superb, not perfect, but damn good.

I got this for Christmas and it runs fine on
P4 640 with 7900GTX & 2gig of ram. I'm not running it turned all the way up, but it ain't down low either....

Haven't been following this thread much cause I couldn't get into Fallout 3 but that's changed...

Since I got a 24 inch monitor I managed to sit down for a half a day to play this game and OMG I love it! At first I was put off by the "Oblivion with guns" aspect and felt like I was playing a DLC of that game but now I see the folly of my ways. I can't even begin to to stress how much better this game looks on ultra high settings with 4AA/16AF at 1920x1200 compared to high settings at 1280x960. If you thought the Oblivion engine was aging think again! I'm also using that HQ texture mod but I don't know how much different that makes it look.

I'm only lvl 6 and I've only scratched the surface of Fallout 3...

So which is the better game overall oblivion or fallout 3?
it's oblivion for me.

but even still, fallout 3 still deserves to be game of the year.

Np man, big ups to Derek for sharing the awesome. I can't remember the last game I played all night into the morning, wow, this game just makes you want to keep on playing and just to pwn in it, I can see why most people are already done with the game/went straight to the main quest, the game is so good its hard to resist.

The people actually acknowledge the people who have died in the town, their stories actually changing and moulding around who is dead and who still remains alive, at level 2 I was too weak to kill everyone at one time, so I killed a few unimportant denizens, ran away, came back after leveling up at the school, seems they had forgotten it was me though this is probably to make the game playable plus I was really impressed that the game acknowledges key characters who have gone and the story changes around that. You are extremely right SFOSOK, sometimes it does feel like a really well made mod for Obvlivion, other times like an unbelievably awesome game. I don't know, Bethesda Softworks are a great company for having pulled this off, plus you don't get that repetitive monotonous feeling that you'd get in Oblivion when leveling, I think that one of the main reason for the fast leveling/cap at level 20 in this game is to remove the feel of drudgery that you'd get in most RPGs, no matter what anyone says they struck a perfect balance between quest length/what you have to do to level and the amount of time it takes for you to get to the next level. I love it.

Man, I don't know what Nvidia did, but the new drivers, v.181.20), are shit. Every game I've thrown at them on Vista x64 is crashing. At first I thought it was just a glitch in Tomb Raider: Underworld where it crashed a couple times, but then so did UT3, then PoP, and now Fallout3. But Fallout 3... holy crap is it ever driving me nuts. One crash after another. Inside it's not too bad, but out in the Wastelands... crash crash crash with an nvd3dum.dll error every time. And VATS.. forget about it. Can't use them. Look up at the sky, and crash. Bah.

If you guys are having issues like this stick with Forceware 180.48 or 180.84. As soon as I went back to 180.84 everything has been fine. I played for nearly 4 hours straight with not one crash.

Yup, and the same goes for the 4870X2 and any cross fire setups, you're best off with 8.11 than 8.12.

anyone try out the darnified UI for fallout 3? darn has a great ui for oblivion as well.

Nice mod. I use the one he has for Oblivion, and it's nice to see I can get that for Fallout 3 too.

BTW, what mods are you guys running? In my case:

Fallout 3 - High Definition Texture Pack (what a difference this makes)
A.C.E - Amplified Crippled Effects v2-0b (makes the game harder for me, and harder for NPCs)
Dogmeat Armor (no, no armor for him, but it makes him an essential character, so he can't die)
Shoulder_Cam_By_Saiden_Storm_v12-577 (3rd person tight shoulder cam)
and now ~ DarNified UI F3 ~ (originally was using Essential UI)

I also have a bunch of retexture mods, such as the HD pack I mentioned, a super mutant one, the replacement hockey mask, World Industries pistol, and so on. Game looks really nice with these.

is that the 400 mb pack? alot of modders and authors not to happy cause somone just gathered up a bunch of folks texture mods and packed em up with out permission or credit. that ACE pack looks neet but im about 2/3 through a game and i have only been playing with texture mods in order not to chane the gameplay too much. i really dont want to break any saves or anything this far in, so next round ill mess with some game play mods.

I was just in the middle of playing, and the game updated to 1.1. Quite a surprise to say the least as there is no mention about a patch anywhere, so I have no idea what is in it.

Edit: OH CRAP! This patch just pooched my saves!

Edit 2: God damnit! 2/3rds of my saves are toast. Every time I load them I end up in the Wastelands during the day beside the school, naked, with nothing, and all my stats are reset. Plus all the raiders are naked too. This sucks! I just played for 8 hours straight to lose everything?

Edit 3: Well, I figured it out. One of the mods is screwing things up. As soon as I remove all the mods things go back to normal. Now to figure out which one.

Edit 4 (last one. LOL!): Be careful of the mods you guys have. I was running with a mod as a test, and this was the bugger that was messing things up.

Amplified Crippled Effects proved to be a good addition for a game where my heavy guns merc character started to get invincible before lvl 10. The big texture package is sweet.

Reneers_Invisible_Karma_Mod_09-246 (For the shear amount of karma, both positive and negative, the pop ups both in sound and visual, were getting on my nerves. So, this little puppy takes care of that).

Cliffs_Sellable_Body_Parts (finally, a way to sell off those body parts you get off Super Mutants and their gore bags. Doc Barrows in Underworld will take them off your hands. Um.. no pun intended).

JNF_Mad_Max_Dog_and_Gun-673 (this has 2 parts: a reskin of Deadmeat to look like Mad Maxs dog in the 2nd film, and a reskin of the sawed off shotgun to Maxs one. Why the reskin? It just looks cool, and makes him stand out)

Phalanx-Obedient-Dogmeat-1631 (this one lets you tell Dogmeat how to attack enemies, such as being agressive, subtle, or running away. If you don't use the Dogmeat Armor this is bloody useful since he'll not be so agressive, and survive longer.. unless that's what you want him to be)

Every texture for every gun (2 parts: main_file-504 & Melee_weapons_add-504. Someone upped the resolution on all the weapons in the game, so the textures are sharp, and no longer blurry making all the weapons look better)

I still use a couple texture mods outside of this one, such as the World Industries Pistol, HD SubMachineGun reTex, and Gun_metal_grey_and_black_laser_weapons-434, but I have to say, all the guns look better now.

I'm too far into the curent character to toss in a bunch of these mods as I, like hobo, don't want to screw up any saves. But, I have to say that I can't wait to finish up with my uber evil character, load in a bunch of these mods and then play a reasonable good guy. I do love this game. I'd consider it perfect if they hadn't gone & changed the combat from the auto turn based to the VATS system. I still like the F1 & F2 turn system better. :/
