Half Life 2 is constanly Locking up.

For these last few days i have been trying to figure out why half life 2 freezes on the opening screen.And windows vista (64 bit) reports the application is Not Responding.and the only way is to close it is to crtl/alt Delete.

The screenshot below shows as far as it will load.Once the 64bit enabled icon shows up on the top left corner.Thats the point when it becomes none responsive.



I have tried restarting steam and even to the point of removing hl2 and reinstalling.I have also removed steam altogether

Also its the only steam related game that is showing this problem..

Im not sure if its related to the recent release of nvidias driver 180.48 whql drivers.As thes drivers are working very well for the other games i play.

I would like to know if anyone has any other tips before i try the betas that was released previous.

Same problem, using radeon.

Use this to run it 32bit, it will run.

Thanks for that... BlueMak i will give that try sometime tomorrow when i have a little more time.

But i don't see why i have to to enable 32 bit to play HL2... when HL2 previously played on Vista 64 without problems.I guess i might need to roll back to a previous driver to see if this makes a difference.

-applaunch 220 -32bit works fine.I guess there must be a corrupt file in the 64 bit download..Tried it again and the 64bit and it froze again.

It's a known issue. Lost Coast won't work either, but since Epi 1 and 2 don't run in 64bit mode those are working fine. Valve gave a quick answer about it in the forums a couple days ago saying that a fix was in the works, but that's pretty much all they've said on the matter (and it took a long long time just to get that from them).

A little off topic, but, I'm glad you reminded me of this title. I cranked it up and went through the "Mudslinger" levels again. That's one of the most fun episodes I've ever had in any game. And, it's gets really cool once you get the aircraft gun.
