Im going out with my brother tomorrow to get him his third xbox. ran out of time on the RMA for the others (which were repaired also a few times).

Worst built console of all time, by a long shot. the 2 Billion in repair fees Microsoft had to fork out will hopefully make them realise that the next one needs to be designed by someone with a clue on how to cool components in a small space.

hint: a simple duct with two cheap loud ass fans and slotting a DVD Drive over memory modules while passively cooling the GFX will not work.

The Elite will be replacing the Pro version and they will only have the Arcade and Elite. You'd think it would make more sense to ditch the Arcade and keep the Pro and Elite, but this is Mickeysoft we're talking about

when i purchased my 360, it was the arcade version. at the time of my 360 purchase, the pro version was only offering the 20GB HDD. i found it overall cheaper than the elite to buy the arcade and then get a 120GB HDD seperately.

besides, the black 360 is pretty ugly IMO. it's not a true black. it's more of a dark grey IMO.

I have to say I am lucky with my xboxes. My first (the white with 20GB HDD) is still working and never had a problem with it apart from the disc tray that some times it won't open with the first try.
My second one, that I use, is a black 120GB one and it is quieter and no problems so far, at all.
From reading reports all over (I never met one in person who has one), I am one of the lucky few who have not one but two of them without problems.

One thing that perhaps helps and it is an advice to you all that have or want to buy a Xbox 360 is the following that I do always and it might help.
After finishing watching a movie or playing a game, etc, quit the game and go back to the dashboard. Leave it there for at least 10 min. After that time, then switch it off.

Mine is the new version of it, it's not as noisy, black as death and works PERFECTLY, I have read alot about the "red ring of death" etc., but theyv'e fixed it, it's no longer a problem. besides, my 360 is beeing treated nicley

The black one, in matters of 360, is better, you don't see it getting dirty :P, altough it really is a matter of opinion..

Don't be a affraid with the new xbox, it's not going to ruin itself, they really did made it better.

Nope. The newer ones come with 512mb of onboard memory to store game saves, although you might get an older one that has 256mb. It's something, but as you pointed out, the HDD is a must these days.

FFVII - Cloud, everyone here has said it over and over again: don't buy the Arcade. Pay the extra money, and get the one with the hard drive. Once you start accessing areas of the 360, more specifically Live!, such as downloading demos, and Arcade games, then you will be thankful that you have the hard drive. Even if you want to play older Xbox games you need the hard drive in order to do so. Trust us on this one. In the end you will regret getting the Arcade, so buy the Pro if you can still get them, or the Elite.

dark grey, charcoal black is the same difference really. i much prefer true blacks such as the ps3 or what many samsung monitors/TVs have for black. sure, these examples are glossy, but even if it didn't have the gloss, it would still be what i consider a true black.

and if he still goes with the Arcade, he should purchase the HDD separately on the same order. preferably the 120GB since it would be cheaper than the 360 Elite. if he goes with a 60GB HDD, he may as well get the 360 Pro.

Don't wry guys. I'm not actually getting it for Live. The most fun I ever had with a console was playing the Sega Master System with my Dad. It will be the same this time. If I was getting it for my room, then, I'd probably get a PS3, but for our lounge to every so often take out my anger with my family an Arcade is quite sufficient, for now... Tell yer what... If I decide in the future that the game's aren't enough and I need more, then I'll pick a HDD or a new XBOX if one come's out by then. Wasn't it called a XBOX 720 or something?? I heard that the new one will have a major graphics overhaul over the current one. Like new Intel CPUS major Nvidia shape shifting hardware. That was like a year ago. I wonder what they're doing with it now??

The price drop should appear in another week or so. A US Wal-Mart flyer popped up on the net shows the Elite for $299.99 beginning August 30th. One retailer here in Canada is already selling an Elite with Halo 3 and a wireless adapter for $329.99. An awesome deal considering that the wireless adapter usually sells for $90.00

As slugbug mentioned the price drop on the 360s will be hitting by September 1rst. Say bye bye to the 60GB (being phased out), say hello to a $30 dollar increase in the Arcade, and a price drop to $299 for the Elite.

Picked it up today. $299 AU XBOX360 Arcade. I also eyed a 60GB HD that I'll install myself. Cost for that one was 149 AU. Plus an extra controller costs 79 AU. I also picked up a copy of the first Sonic The Hedgehog. So far I'm at the island trying to get used to flying Tails. Wicked so far.

So far my fav game's are FEAR 2 and Soul Caliber 4. In FEAR 2 after 5 playing sessions and several campaign restarts I have reached the part of the hospital level where you get above the facility and are in some kind of cave system walking across boardwalks. I expect the next section to get quite dramatic. In Soul Caliber 4 I played through the story mode once successfully the first time. Stopping the ressurrection was a great acheivement for me. BTW my Bro-In-Law gave me his spare 60Gig Hard Drive. So all I need to do now is Wi-Fi it all up grab a pass and headset. My avatar has sideburns.

I got GRID yesterday - 60 bucks. I've played it twice and my fav cars are the Toyota Supra and Chevy Camaro. I'm getting first places on a couple tracks while practicing drifting will be a challenge I expect though with enough time to do it I will ace it also.

It has barely enough room from the top for airflow. I hope it has plenty of space in the back. Also, I am too lazy to check, but if there is hot air blowing near your toy cars, which I presume have some plastic, there is a good chance they will get damaged in time.

Now that I've got an HDTV I really take back some of the things I've said about Xbox 360 games, I had previously hooked it up in 1920x1080 to my monitor but it never looked this good. For example, Dirt 2 demo blew my ass away...I can't even think of a PC game that looked that stunning on max details with SLI 260's and the 360 costs way less. My sis picked up an Arcade version for $150 and soon after a used hard drive for 20 bucks...that's the cheapest way to enjoy an Xbox I think.
