Has anyone here played any version of it, for the PC? Or read any sneak review/preview of the PC version? Basically I am trying to get any info possible as to if the game is playable on a PC or it is a horribly optimized port.

While I have respect for Volition, I have heard some horrible things about the PC version/port of Saints Row 2, and I just don't want to buy a lemon. Buy as in preorder cause I get the first two games for free if I do.

Well , saints row 2 PC didn't even has a in-menu mouse support. Don't know about Red faction but since it a THQ game , I think it will be a poor port imo.

The min reqs are very low, but...while the graphics and memory requirements are very low, the CPU are quite high. This screams to me GTAIV at best, SR2PC at worst.

I am in, about 1/5 to 1/4 I guess, the first game. After installing Pure Faction 3.0 (a mod/unofficial patch) able to run the game on Vista 64 with my 8GB of ram at 1920x1200 without any problem. Mind you, before I installed it the game still ran fine, but with max resolution of 1280x1024.
For its age the game is good. Not ground breaking ( ) but good decent FPS. The theme is very good (I do have a soft spot for Total Recall), the animation for the enemy dying troops is good, the graphics are a bit spartan but good, sounds is fine, the music repeats itself often, but it is still not annoying enough or an annoyance to be turned off (which is rare for me). The story is ok, nothing special, but interesting enough to want to see what's next. There are simple puzzles in the game, mostly about blowing shit up, not a problem yet (I don't like puzzles).
What I found very very interesting is the following. According to all reviews I read, the game doesn't use the ability to destroy walls/environment but to a couple of cases and even then there are yellow signs to do so at exact spots of the wall/floor/etc.
So, my question to the reviewers is, have you played the game past the first half an hour? It doesn't look likely. Apart from the first caves, you get the chance to destroy parts of the environment in several places, and you don't get any yellow signs. You might get a audio que from someone on the radio, but even that is not for everything. I have my doubts how many reviewers actually played the game.

From what I understand Red Faction 2 is even better (unless you want multiplayer, but I don't), so the 28 euros for them look like a fantastic price if you ask me lol.

Running at 1920x1200, all details at max apart from blur which is off. And AA which I set to 0.
The game looks great. The game feels great, the game plays great.

It's too soon but so far it's freaking awesome and plays without frame rate issues.


Actually I had a problem with the activation orginally, but it was fixed when instead of copy and paste I keyed in the serial.

BTW, to anyone who might know. For the activation it asked my email address and the serial. Am I right to assume it will lock them two? I don't mind if this is the only DRM. (much)

The change of resolution seems to have fixed itself after rebooting.


Although I didn't have any issue with the frame rate, I decided to lower the resolution to 1680x1050 for a better average.

I don't know if it is my love for Total Recall, or what, but the game feels so right.

To the negatives I would say the driving experience is at best, average.

If you need/want even better performance, turn to FALSE the ambient occlusion. I don't know what it does exactly, I couldn't notice anything different in the 5 min I tried it without it, but you get a big boost in performance.
Also, it makes the driving part much better. I don't know how or why, but driving now is actually kind of fun.

The shooting part of the game reminds me of the best parts of Lost Planet. The only thing now that I don't like (since driving is good now) is the "cover" system with the button. It does shit. IF you are facing a wall then it will just stick to it. You will not be able to do much else and the few times that you can look from the side, you will not be able to fire (wtf?). It's either broken or I am not doing something right.
Thankfully it doesn't ruin the fight system which is great fun.

I have gone to the second sector (the first remains open that you can visit if you want) and DAMN it is large! There are several missions that you need to complete if you are to gain/free the sector. There are even more missions/assignments that you can do to gain "money", or to help in the cause. Some of the missions so far, freeing captive colonists, destroying X building(s), stealing guarded vehicles (parked or on patrol), spying on the movements of an enemy vehicle, attacking convoys (attacking, reinforcements, other), defending third party installations, defending safe houses, etc.
With this pre-order I have finally abolished the stigma preorders had for me (resident evil 4 pc)

Screenshots make the PC version look too "console-esque." I was a big fan of the Red Factions on PS2 though.

Really? The game looks great to me. I am talking about the actual game, not screenshots. I have to admit though that I am not 100% sure what you mean by "console-esque". It's a great fun game. It's like Mass Effect meets GTA, only without the story of ME, and a lot more violence, all the time.

That's what I loved about the original. Haven't played it yet so my opinion doesn't mean much, but it seems that all the screenshots I see show big GUI's all over screen and gives it an arcade feel. No?

I'm not doubting for a sec it looks great on PC.

Original RF or GTA?
Anyway, I remember seeing screenshots that had huge ACHIEVEMENT THIS or something all over the screen, but while playing you rarely see anything. I would say that, at least the PC version, that I have, the GUI is quite lean and friendly, but not in a "I believe your IQ is below 70" kind of way.

EDIT: I told you It is very much like it, you can even mine in some locations as you could on planetary missions on ME, although as I mentioned before, the get cover key seems to be broken, so you have to manually get behind cover, crouch, etc.

I agree on the Lost Planet comparison which I got bored of real quickly unfortunately. However, I will give this game a go once I'm done with Arkham Asylum and Resident Evil 5.

It is a great game. Finally a game that uses physics in a meaningful way and not the tech demos or visual demos that are integrated into so many other games of the last few years.

It has problems, there are some bugs and companies should really stop releasing games where they put as minimum requirements systems that are well behind what is needed to play the game and not just load the menu.

I am very glad I jumped to the quad core wagon a while ago...

If they release a patch or two fixing the major bugs, then I believe this game has "classic" potential.
